re: Drunk! But in your own self driving car?

Fun fact- there's legal posturing now in legislatures where they are debating using a "User in charge" theory. Where because you're drunk, you're too incapacitated to submit an order for an Uber on your own. Some proposed laws suggest that if you own the vehicle and "dispatch" it (i.e., tell it where to go), you are the legal operator even if you aren't touching a wheel. Under this theory, you could still be charged with a DWI because you made the "executive decision" to put the vehicle in motion while impaired.
Ridiculous .

States are already passing or crafting laws regarding this. You have to be able to drive.
 this is such a racket. I guess it makes me old when I remember DWI's being about safety and not getting buckets of cash and an entire cottage industry making otherwise law abiding citizens get DWI's.

If she was smart, she makes it a commercial self driving vehicle like a taxi. If I remember right taxis are exempt from DUI laws regarding carrying drunk drivers.

I mean this is kind of cool and all but to be clear this is a massive gift to the MIC using old technology with the express purpose of corporate welfare. Why are taxpayers blowing $100 billion+ on a rocket that will be used exactly once? Or maybe the right defense contractors just need some money in their pocket?

Either there's more to the story here or this is a lot of home cooking and some LEO settling a score...

re: 2025-2026 Ski Thread
Posted by NYNolaguy1 on 1/5/26 at 6:24 pm to fargobison
For the money and skiing conditions I am happy to be on the east coast in relative proximity to Catskills/Adirondacks/VT/NH, at a fraction of the cost and much better snow. I realize it won't be like this every year .

Go to Plattekill. When they have good snow that place is great.
I heard that too- we got season passes for Belleayre/Gore/Whiteface and have been really enjoying it. My sister is in Denver and sending me jealous messages about how this year is going to wreck Colorado skiing at the current prices out there. Why drop $300+ on just a lift ticket when you can go to elsewhere for way cheaper?

kinda miss skiing but damn I don’t miss throwing down 8-10 grand
Upstate New York (Adirondacks/Catskills) has skiing with season passes and season rentals at like $1.5k for two kids and an adult all in. :dunno:. New England is only a little more expensive.

One of the few years where east coast skiing is arguably better than the Rockies...
Gore, Whiteface, Killington, etc are having banner years for snowfall, at rates wayyyyyy cheaper than the Rockies.

Having been inside for work reasons, the site is relatively small, but the buildings inside are huge. Lot of cool history too. Even in the winter it's always very hot inside.

Better to swap it out for physical gold I think.

That's about $60k in silver by a rough count, was about $70k over the weekend before the price dropped a little.
Not sure I'd advertise that on the interwebs.

And so it was that the Hagia Sophia, until the completion of the modern version of St. Peter's Basilica in 1626 - over 1,000 years later, was the largest Christian structure the world had yet known.
Constantinople was conquered in 1453 by Ottoman Muslims and turned into a mosque, way before 1626.
Somebody is off on their timeline here.

Ironically you'll get more snow in the mountains north of NYC than you'll get in Colorado.

Yeah, and im not even *necessarily* arguing for being pro-DUI checkpoint.. my thing is i just dont understand the appeal of drinking & driving … i dont drink much anymore, but back when i used to imbibe on the regular, i cant even count how many times i said ‘ok, ill go out and only have a beer, or two’.. and then wind up throwing down 4 or 5.. and id driven to the bar so of course i drove home .. im a fairly self-confident guy, yet i dont trust myself a whole lot to stop at a beer, or two, or even three.. and i know i cant be the only one who’s a terrible judge of when ‘enough is enough .’
If you want true ‘freedom’- to me that would be calling an Uber to start the evening, that way you arent even tempted to drive later and take chances with DUIs and accidents .
It's not about public safety. It's about maximizing revenue pulling over whoever they can at thousands dollars/stop. This is a fundraising activity.
