He died of a heart attack during the battle, and was played by Henry Fonda in "The Longest Day."

If I’m not mistaken, Quinton was a pilot and Teddy’s hawkish stance cooled a lot after that.

TR was a broken man after this. Off topic, but read "My Last Chance To Be A Boy" published by the LSU Press. It's a book about Teddy Roosevelts Amazon exploration, and is very interesting. He became ill during this journey and never really recovered.

This is true, although they exhumed/moved Quentin in 1955.

Shame he was not mentioned as part of D-Day anniversary. He was only general to go ashore in the first wave,Also was the oldest soldier at 56 years old.Recieved the Congressional Medal of Honor.Wikipedia has the story.

I almost mentioned him but I have before. I learned about his heroics on the OT years ago.

His son was also in the first wave on the beach and if I remember right were the only father son on the beaches.

Was he any more important than the 1000s of others that went ashore? Can't mention everyone.

Years later, Omar Bradley was asked to name the single most heroic action he had ever seen in combat. He replied, "Ted Roosevelt on Utah Beach."

Actually, He landed on Utah beach. The problem he faced was that the Navy had landed elements of the 4th infantry in the wrong place.(more than a mile off). At that point Roosevelt could either stick with the plan and have the regiment move down the beach to where they were supposed to land or chuck the whole plan and start the war where they were landed. Roosevelt told Van Fleet to start the war right here and get inland. It turned out to be the correct decision.

If you visit the Battleship Alabama in Mobile, there is a wall of Alabama CMoH earners. One young man was in a B-17 that had a phosphorous bomb start to ignite and threatened to explode the entire plane. HE PICKED UP THE BOMB AND WALKED OFF THE PLANE... I can only imagine the pain and agony as his skin was melting in his effort to save his buddies. My wife and kids couldn't understand why I suddenly burst out crying in the museum.

THAT is a CMoH recipient. If Roosevelt got it for being high-ranking and old, I'll be disappointed. Disgusted in fact.

It’s far more than that. B. General Roosevelt Jr. made a gut check decision at Utah beach. He departed from the planned landing zone. The transport ships drifted off course and he made the decision to land where they did. He personally did the recon and adjusted the whole damn landing coordinating everything on the fly.

“Roosevelt pointed almost every regiment to its changed objective. Sometimes he worked under fire as a self-appointed traffic cop, untangling traffic jams of trucks and tanks all struggling to get inland and off the beach. One GI later reported that seeing the general walking around, apparently unaffected by the enemy fire, even when clods of earth fell down on him, gave him the courage to get on with the job, saying if the general is like that it can't be that bad.” -Wikipedia-

The outcome resulted in the best executed landing out of all of them. Turns out the Germans were entrenched and much better prepared to defend if they landed as planned. Total casualties were around 300. Contrast that with Omaha beach and tell me he didn’t deserve the award.
