I’d argue America has been losing a war for a couple decades now. Our society is disgusting and perverted. Our government is bloated and out of control. Our economy is a bankrupt house of cards propped up by debt. Our education system is a complete disaster. Propaganda pours into our every day lives through every device we own. Our children are brainwashed, overstimulated, and underdeveloped. Our political system is apathetic and dysfunctional. Our family units are staggeringly broken and stressed. Our church’s are either empty or corrupt. Etc….

Your overall point is correct.
Americans have an extremely low tolerance for discomfort and the collective American voice is very loud.
China on the other hand. Well the Chinese don't share our sensitivities and their skin is thicker. Additionally, the Chinese Government can exert much more control over their people and it's behavior. Now it's not unlimited with China. China has to concern itself with social upheaval and revolt, but China's willingness and ability to oppress buys them time Trump doesn't have.
This is a legit trade war now and although the Chinese Government has alot to lose, they can gut this out longer than Trump.
If this is now about who flinches first. Well China holds alot of cards and can endure alot of pain.
