El Rushbo called it way back then. Communism morphed into the environmental movement (Greenpeace / Sierra Club). He called them watermelons, green on the outside but all red on the inside.

And Germany is currently de-industrializing because the energy costs are so high that their products can't be competitive. Hopefully, they'll just move their production to the U.S. where we have cheap and plentiful natural gas.
