re: Conservatives: what's your beef with libertarianism?

yeah TWICE in this thread there were 2 major "ignoring reality" bombs that literally ignored reality and how their policies created that reality
look i agree big-L libertarianism is a dream at best (likely a nightmare at best, honestly) but if you define libertarianism as "reducing the size and power of government, especially the federal government" it's a legit reality
but, as you pointed out earlier, the GOP has become such a shell of its proclaimed ideologies and so much like the DEMs younger sibling, actually reducing the power of government is abhorrent. it's just disguised in different ways via propaganda/groupthink

Libertarianism is neither moderate nor leftist. In many ways its farther right than Conservatism.
Some real misinformation around here.

I feel like most people have heard the maxim, but haven’t heard or can’t remember the name. It’s kind of like the opposite of Occam’s Razor: everyone has heard of it, yet if you ask them to articulate the maxim, their eyes get wide with fear

The misinformation started with your OP.

Wrong. It is explicitly right wing.

I was a libertarian - and that’s my natural inclination - until I saw how powerless it is in the face of communism/postmodernism. How it invites them to destroy us.
TRUMP woke me up. Now I support autocracy in the form of perpetual rule by Trump. The only thing keeping the communist/postmodern wolf away is STRENGTH.
I’ve also developed great admiration for Pinochet. There’s a decent man who saw reality for what it is and did what he had to do to keep communism from devouring his people. He was a shepherd who wasn’t afraid to defend his flock.

I don't think the government gets to discriminate against consumers of public services based on political views.
original response:
quote:
Thanks for sticking up for this one! The Nazis of America thank you!
my replies:
quote:
Yeah so do I need to explain how laws work, and how they remain even if the "perceived bad guy" is eliminated? Creating this policy makes it legal for government to restrict services for socialists or Democrats, too. You'd think you people would have learned this lesson under Trump (Who is using the very government expansion you championed under Obama)
quote:
I'll summarize: giving government powers to use against your enemies just means that when they are in power, they can use it against you. Why would you ever support that?
and...here...we...go
quote:
Yeah, I've been practicing law for 25 years. I also practice in the area of constitutional law. I get "how laws work." As an area of pure First Amendment assertion, I understand what you're saying, but as an act of civill disobedience, I don't think you understand the acts of the union workers.
quote:
Consider the possibility the union considers its provision of services to be the state's endorsement of the group's views concerning denial of due process, equal protection, and voting rights to individuals based on their race and national origin. That would be a violation of the Fourteenth Amendment (actually, this being DC, it would violate the Fifth Amendment).

I don't. None of my conservative friends give two craps about gays marrying.

Libertarianism
What 95% of this board was from 2008-2016. Near as I can tell, it was merely a fad during the Obama administration. Akin to the tea party in a sort of way. Why don’t you hear about those guys anymore? It was hip and contrarian to be a libertarian and then 2016 happened.

2016 happened when the libertarian party consistently showed themselves as weak on immigration and border security and gave an opening to someone like Donald Trump.
Donald Trump saw a winning issue from day one in illegal immigration and the underlying battle in it being political correctness and used it to crush 16 republicans including the most libertarian senator in Rand Paul, conquer the GOP and take ownership of it lock, stock and barrel.
For a newbie, Trump is a political genius with very good instincts. It's really impressive when you think about the odds Trump was up against. He beat two big political dynasties in the Bushes, Clintons, establishment in both parties, the media and foreign governments meddling in the election.
