At least I don't force my views on others. You celebrate that fact.

Good thing this country let you move here so you could tell others how to live.

Yes, but it's also a word in English. It means the islamic god.

Well that certainly seems like endorsement of a specific religion, then. You prove a point you aren’t trying to.

I'm mixed on this. The motto provides some cover, although if I were a Florida resident I'd probably question whether this provides any benefit to the schools of the state.

In general I prefer to focus my energy on protecting religious aspects of public life that have acquired non-religious significance than on creating new intersections of government and religion that seem, in part, to be just new fronts in the culture war.

Can I ask what your background is with the Christian religion?

57 years of Divinity School. See how easy it is to fabricate stuff?

Seriously, many hundreds of hours reading about comparative religion, with Christianity comprising perhaps half of that.

I find the topic fascinating, and I look at it from the perspective of a researcher rather than an adherent. I have taken several tests on Biblical knowledge, and I normally score in the top percentiles. I also find the evolution of the Christian Church to be fascinating ... and much more complex than most Christians understand. I feel I have a firm grasp on the subject.

BTW, my post about God tailoring his story to different demographics was sarcasm, if you missed that part. God may well exist. All religions are man-made.

Thank you for clarifying. I thought you were serious as many here (even many professing Christians) don't seem to know what they are talking about when it comes to history and doctrine of particular religions.

Jesus Christ. Leave it to Florida to pass a law Requiring some wizard in the sky's name to be on all of the schools.

It's the official United States motto, but I'm sure you knew that.

Your comment seemed to convey that it was some arbitrary religious saying that had no context outside of a church building.

Note that this did not become the national motto until the 1950s, in response to the Soviet threat.

For almost 200 years before that time, the motto was “E Pluriibus Unum,” which seems more fitting to me.

That's fine. We can debate whether we should change the motto. I'm just saying that it's currently the national motto and not some random religious graffiti that Florida wants to spray on educational buildings down there.

That's one thing that always irks me in these debates. People want to act like "under God" and "In God We Trust" were laid down by the Founding Fathers. It dates from the height of the Cold War and in that light it seems more like propaganda.

The Pledge of Allegiance that we know today (except the "under God" part) was written by a socialist. It was originally supposed to have a line about "equality" but he struck it out because women and black people weren't equal under the law.

It’s funny that you mention slavery as though it’s negative connotations are solely associated with the United States. Before I go any further, I have to ask, are you aware of any other history outside of the United States? Because for you to contribute slavery as being a problem of the United States shows your ignorance. There isn’t a country on earth where slavery hasn’t been implemented at one point in time. Not to mention that many of the countries that trump designed as being shitholes still use slavery today. I guess you’re purposely ignorant?
