Science is more interested in radical action, than being right. It’s a point Curtis Yarvin makes.
In 1930, a scientist won’t get famous confirming the benefits of breast milk.
They can get famous though, producing a study that concludes formula is better than breast milk.
It doesn’t matter if you’re right or you’re wrong.

You are wrong. Research it. Talk to mothers and doctors who lived in that time. Don't close your mind off defensively. Learn something new about the world and cultural-medical history of your country

It was to many. There was quite a stigma. It's where the breastfeeding pride reaction came from. Breastfeeding was considered shameful, backwards, ignorant and anti-science

Well, with the addition of this experimental drug “vaccine” for Covid, you might have to think twice about breastfeeding. That’s hoping nothing harmful is transferred during the pregnancy.

No, they didn't.
Yes they did, I am 67, I was raised entirely on formula. When my first kid was born I asked my mother why she didn’t breast feed us. She said no one back then did, her doctor told her breast feeding could negatively affect my growth because it’s nutrition might not be sufficient.

Tell that one to Darwin…oh that’s right, you can’t, because of the big “L” he took!

This is true, but not because they believe formula was better. When breastfeeding, it's really difficult to know how much milk he child was is actually getting. Many babies will lightly latch on and use the breast as a pacifier. Those babies could easily become malnourished in a very short time. Formula allows the mother to know how many ounces the child is getting.

quote:That's incorrect. It's been known for thousands of years that soon after being born, the infant should begin gaining significant weight rapidly. Potentially deadly weight loss can be determined by smelling for the fruity scent of ketosis on the infant's breath. At this point you begin to supplement. This is not old wive's stuff, this is how Harvard trained Neonatologists clinically determine a newborn's milk consumption and when they order supplementing, through weighing and checking for ketosis. Weighing is how pediatricians in the followup determine it. Weighing and sniffing are easy

There have also been studies that show a correlation between breastfeeding length and intelligence.
Both my kids were 100% formula fed because my wife never produced. 8yrs (girl) and 7yrs (boy). I was 100% formula myself.
Both are in gifted programs and my boy has done well enough for them to test him beyond just “gifted”
I have been IQ tested for employment at a private company that only hired high intelligence people after the initial interview. I got the job and was told I scored the highest in the history of the company (they started testing in 1995). My brother got an honors undergrad and then top of his class for MBA and is currently a managing partner at one of the big accounting firms. Won’t say which for privacy but it’s one of the big ones everyone knows of.
Overall in a population the intelligence thing might be real. Not disputing that. Anecdotally it is complete bullshite.
I have no chronic health issues outside mental but that runs in my family 4-5 generations back. Never taken a flu shot, had the flu once in my life for example.
Maybe we are exceptions to the rule.
While we were forced to due to medical reasons, formula has showed exactly zero negative effects on our kids.

There's certainly in many of these studies at least overlap with the simple nurture aspect. Causation is not correlation as an esteemed poster pointed out. Maybe some people think playing classical music to the crib makes the baby smarter. The truth is probably moreso that people who listen to classical music are on average more intelligent, so they create more intelligent babies. This kind of thing can I'm sure explain some correlation in all the studies of breastfeeding versus formula.
A loving teaching guiding intelligent parent who bottle fed is doing a lot more for their child than a dumb neglectful POS who breastfed. There's no doubt about that.
This thread is not to say formula is bad. Or belittle anyone. The point is formula is now known to not be better than breastmilk. This notion was promoted by doctors, and strongly reinforced by social mores for a generation. And it's been forgotten history. We got doctor defenders in here justifying some other reason why they promoted formula. We got a younger generation in here saying it never happened even though all you gotta do is ask someone who remembers.
I just think it's interesting there can be this giant worldwide blunder, promoted by doctors and false mantras of science "it has all the nutrition" repeated in society everyone believed in not that long ago. And yet it's also just sort of forgotten for the younger generation.

Please tell me how GMO'S are bad.
Basically all a gmo is a DNA segment is altered in the plant so that is becomes stronger- for example: more resistant to pests so less pesticide cam be used. Or, makes plant absorb nitrogen better so less fertilizer can be used.

Margarine says hello in that era too. So now science is correct on MRNA vaccines being safe and effective
Obviously science has advanced us and done many incredible things but to trust it at every turn

Correlation does not equal causation.

Damn, Gaggle! You nailed it. Very nuanced thinking with a clear explanation of why this is significant.
