It’s the way it was done.
France isn’t going to be angry with us if Canada chooses our F35 over their Rafale jet fighter.
But France has been working exclusively with Australia on a $60B submarine deal for years that was in its final stage. And we secretly entered into side negotiations with Australia at the last minute and offered them nukes.
It’s the way it was done.

From a French perspective he's not wrong. France should put France first just like America should put America first.
This sub deal came completely out of left field and, interestingly enough, right after France killed a major ISIS leader and the US murdered a bunch of civilians in Afghanistan that Biden swore was ISIS.

We have a better product and a national interest in countering China closer to their land than ours.
Either offer Australia a better deal than we can or shut the frick up, France.

I don't disagree. However, I was told we had to elect Biden because OMB had alienated all of our allies and only Biden could restore our international prestige. Well, how's that working out?

Australia cancelled a contract to buy subs from the French in favor of a deal to buy nuclear subs from us.
That contract was for 66 Billion in Diesel Boats. Australia wants to join the Nuclear silent stealth Club. In other words , they want the capability to sneak up and blow holes in Chinese Air Craft Carriers.

You'd think with reasonably competent diplomacy, we wouldn't be faced with this sort of Hobson's Choice between long time allies.

France can blow us. Biden is a fricktard but we need a tighter alliance with australia and the UK a lot more than the frogs.
The French just killed the ISIS leader in NW Africa responsible for the killings of our Green Berets in 2017

The French are vastly more capable than the British and the Australians.
This is a massive economic blow for France. It was a gargantuan contract for the French.

True , but it was them that had our backs and could argue the nail in coffin in Revolutionary War . They have been paid back twice though

No we didn't. The country formally known as the United States did.

It’s certainly very transactional.
I just like this particular transaction in light of an ascendant China.
France is an ally, but they’re not traditionally as close as Australia has been. They’ve diverged from us over the years with deGaulle and Iraq. We paid them back for Lafayette with WW2 so it’s very much a what have you done for me lately situation.

Now is not the time to weaken relationships with Western Allies

Is having US bases in Australia part of the deal?
