If we were isolationist our standard of living would go up. We would have so much more money we didn't throw away overseas. We can produce everything at much better quality. There might be less useless garbage and fewer different variety of products available at higher costs, but this would be more than offset by the quality and the return of a real repair industry. We would only have to get used to this new paradigm, shedding our terrible culture of extreme consumerism and disposability. The environmental impact would be monumental. Nothing could possibly be better for the planet than for America to make all its own products. And our society would be saved. Did you know most of the druggies and white trash in our country used to have jobs in factories and be normal people living right next to you?
