i really don't know the answer. do you just keep increasing tariffs in some industries until it becomes competitive for US companies to do the manufacturing here? is that a better long term solution than buying cheaper products from overseas?

So it's a fine business model to allow other nations to put tariffs on us for decades, but we cannot put tariffs on them
How is allowing other nations to put tariffs on us a business model?
We're America. If i make a superior golf club and other countries put tariffs on their consumers they have to pay more if they wanna buy golf clubs that are created in America.
If i need a material/part to manufacture golf clubs that is created somewhere else i have to buy it. It isnt a choice to just not use aluminum or to create a whole plant to manufacture the part I need.

We can't magically create aluminum deposits.
Its just not a natural resource we possess.
Australia, Brazil, and Guinea have plenty of Aluminum deposits and are countries we can establish reasonable trading agreements with. Some folks just need to have something to bitch about...IMHO

Why is it my fault your glorious Emperor turns what should be a "simple" issue into sticky-wicket? Every time. That's his Cirque du Soleil trademark now.
It's time he started wearing an orange top-hat with with gloves and red clown shoes. That'd be truth-in-advertising.

The only thing I care about being manufactured here is defense essentials. Medicine, processors, etc
I am under no illusion that we will ever manufacture retail junk on a large scale in the USA. China can keep the trinkets if they choose.
My view is and has always been that the tariffs are necessary to close the trade imbalance and currency manipulation, as those are also a national security risk
In fact, Trump should have never made a promise to bring back manufacturing at a grand scale and just stuck to the trade imbalances, but sadly, the average American doesn't understand why that is an issue so he had to throw them red meat.

We have trade deals with them. We'd be paying about the same as everyone else if we didnt have to pay the government a tariff.
Most countries have exceptions for tariffs for stuff not available at home.
America is the only country that missed the memo on that part apparently.
I guess since money isnt real to the government they forget that business actually do have to balance a budget.

Keep crying liberals. This is exactly what I voted for
This will only be passed down to 1) consumers in the form of higher prices and 2) average workers (probably like you) who will be laid off to compensate.

So now bi-polar Trump's 10% tariff "adjustment" (no, now it's 15%) are essential to "security concerns"? On what planet?
As a matter of fact, Trump is a nuisance disruptor of ALL trade and those who are involved with Import-Export bookkeeper and logistics. People like you have NO idea.

That's a very narrow-minded view
Yes...if your business sells only in the U.S. then foreign tariffs don’t really hit you.
But a lot of American companies depend on exports. When other countries slap tariffs on U.S. goods, those products get more expensive overseas, demand drops, and revenue and jobs take a hit.
So sure, a fully domestic business might shrug it off but for export-heavy companies, foreign tariffs are a direct blow. They don’t just hurt “foreign consumers,” they come back around and hurt American workers too.
Something like 50% of Caterpillar's revenue comes from exports. Now imagine the advantage Komatsu has if Japan tariffs Cat.

i can agree with this. but frick this has been a nightmare. different tariff amounts weekly, no consistency, complete business disruptor, etc.

It's really laughable to see you spew some Jr High level analysis, then follow it up with this statement.
Please keep wowing us all with your global trade observations and how simple it all truly is.

just like the revised job losses released last week, once all the aftermath clears people are gonna realize what an economic disaster this entire tariff war has created.
Until they see it firsthand they will run on hopium and whoever doesn't agree has TDS

In a nutshell
It's Monopoly money to them. Bookkeeping and accountability doesn't exist for them either. They are running the US into the ground like any other socialists (D). So just eat your peas and $40T+ deficit and shut UP!

This is so goddamn good if you’re on the left. He has guaranteed the midterms are going blue.
What an absolute genius.

Why are tariffs a good thing?
I do not understand the goal behind the tariffs.
I tend to like what the liberals hate but do not understand the goal behind the tariffs
