So you respond by getting holier than thou to Catholics?

This is like watching Star Wars and Star Trek nerds argue over which is more realistic.

Thou art Peter, and on this rock I will build my church." I'm talking about the different words for Peter and rock.

You claim knowledge of the original Greek here. Did you know that the Greek word for rock is feminine? That the writers would not have given Peter a feminine name so he was given the masculine one? And you seemingly totally ignore the rest of Jesus' words. He was speaking of and to a person. It's why he says "you".

It does no such thing.

quote:

20 “For,” said Peter, “it is written in the Book of Psalms:

“‘May his place be deserted;
let there be no one to dwell in it,’[c]
and,

“‘May another take his place of leadership.’[d]
21 Therefore it is necessary to choose one of the men who have been with us the whole time the Lord Jesus was living among us, 22 beginning from John’s baptism to the time when Jesus was taken up from us. For one of these must become a witness with us of his resurrection.”

They replaced Judas with Matthias. Why do that? Lastly, like all Protestants, you ignore history. The disciples did all ordain replacements. It's historical fact.

Atheist Pope's are fricking awesome.

Now if we could just find a way to incorporate some Atheist Mullahs into Islam the world would suddenly be a much better place to live....

You will never find a group of Atheists dead from voluntarily drinking poisoned kool-aid or an individual atheist dead from driving an airplane into a building because of his beliefs....

Stalin, Chairman Mao and Pol Pot agree. The world is much better off without religion.

By the way, those 3 men killed more people in 50 years than Christianity has in over 2000. Exponentially more.

Yay, atheist utopias.

ETA: Gonna leave this thread alone before I Quixote myself into a ban hammer.

The church has embraced the Big Bang for some time as it accounts for a beginning and end of time

You know that is eerily familiar to the tact the Church took with Copernicus...he was pretty well accepted by "the church" but the same church worked hard to keep the masses from being exposed to his theories because it might lead some of them to doubt the churches teachings. It would be an idiot indeed who doubts that the leaders of the catholic church, some of the most educated scholars in the world today, haven't embraced the big bang and evolution for centuries...what they haven't done is encouraged that same level of enlightment among the masses because it might lead them to question other of the church's teachings.

You want a scientific explanation for something that didn't happen?

So, since you claim this didn't happen then whatever the Pope says holds no authority and therefore renders this thread null and void. Klarvin says he respects the intellectual Catholics, but only in the reality that they ascribe to the same thought process as he in regards to science. But, if you ask most Catholics if they BELIEVE in Christ's resurrection their answer would go against any scientific testing. Without believing the Deity of Christ there is no Catholic Church. So Klarvin really doesn't give any weight to anything the Pope says. If the Pope came out tomorrow and said God revealed to him that evolution is a lie, what would be the response?

they may have been atheists when it comes to God and religion but they were devout believers in a type of religion that a true Atheist could never be....sorry, but you are way off the point here. Communism is every bit as much a religion and cult as the Baptist church is....

This is true, and something that every Christian should both admit and study.

The Papacy is one of our most interesting institutions. For nearly a thousand years, many Christians didn't know the Bishop of Rome's name or care much of his influence. What it has endured, and how it has it changed, is unlike anything else in history.
I'm anxious to see how this present chapter with Francis unfolds.

Pope says holds no authority

The Pope is a world leader, regardless of whether or not I agree with him. The things he says carry weight because of the billions of people that give those things weight. He certainly has no authority over me, but I pay attention when he speaks. Again, my opinion of the validity of his words is irrelevant.

God works in ways beyond our comprehension. He could have used any method to create what we know.

The natural order of things is still beyond our comprehension. We close that gap every day through scientific study and research, but the observable evidence is that after about 6,000 years, humanity is still trying to understand some of the rather basic things about how our world functions. So while you regard it solely as a rhetorical device (and the reason for that is obvious), the evidence suggests that the universe is beyond our current understanding and we'll likely need another 6,000 years to close the gap substantially.
