Lord, thank you for giving me more of a sense of purpose than the OP.

No offense, but you get your sense of purpose in life from your job?

It's not entirely a bad thing but it's not the only thing for sure. Not even close really.

i can assure jughead there are a lot of people in the private sector that make a lot more money than government employees.

This is true. I left a civil service job in May2004 for a private sector job. My bring home pay tripled and that was after maxing out my 401K contribution. Had I stayed, could have retired with roughly 60% pay but wouldn't own a tenth what I do. 20 Years of maximum 401K contributions gets pretty large.

Really? You want to turn this into a Cathy Newman exercise?

Let me put it a different way. About 15 years ago, I met a guy in Cambodia. I was working in Singapore, but we (well, Mrs. Zwin, mostly) supported a shelter in Phnom Penh that worked to keep young boys out of the sex trade.

When I say “young”, I mean parents selling their 3 year olds into this.

Our modest contributions of time and money were minuscule to this guy. He was an American with his own business, and used his wealth to fund a full orphanage there that took the efforts to a whole other level. He had purpose and had built the means to do that, and he was just one example among many wealthy people who do this stuff.

My goal is not to accumulate generational wealth. My goal is to generate the means to make a difference like this guy. The Bible has several parables about taking your talents and making a difference for others, and that’s not just giving them stuff. Give a fish vs. teaching to fish and all that.

A government job better not be the path to that.
