Economics isn’t practiced on most college campuses outside the College Of Business and occasionally the math department.
They are used to getting their regular pay raise and more classroom funds and find it unthinkable when it doesn’t happen.

I honestly think the only humane thing to do this fall would be to just cancel the semester, pay everyone to stay home (including student workers & hourly staff), then just do as many free courses and as much research from home as we safely can. You'd obviously need new budget resources, but holding Jeff Bezos upside-down and giving him a good shake ought to cover it. With a foot in the door for free higher ed like that, you might even be able to fight for just not bringing tuition back after the pandemic. A crisis is a terrible thing to waste.
This is a perfect sign of academics who have never lived in the real world a day in their adult lives

One idiot saying it is understandable.
Everyone lauding him for it or saying “me too” rather than “who did you frick to get this job?”? Less so.

Exactly.
We have some challenges in higher ed this semester. Some we can control, others we can't. If we think we are going to keep students from gathering because a building or a football stadium is closed, we are naive. Many schools understand that.
But at the root are decision makers who think like this. When you see a college go remote this semester without a major outbreak, its about politics. UNC, Michigan State, U. of Pacific, that statement from Syracuse last night. All political at its core.

The fact that they think they should just be allowed to continue to get paid despite not doing their jobs then, of there's no money, they should just go rob rich people, says a lot about how clueless and sheltered these people are.

The sad part is they really don’t know or understand.

Normally I would say they live in fantasy land.
Problem is that these schools are NOT run like a business but more like a government welfare program which exists to serve the bureaucracy within than to produce results.

Its jealousy. Academia has been corrupted beyond belief. They're too spoiled rotten and still want even more.

Yep, it’s a serious problem.
They lay down the groundwork for the next generation of leaders.

I'm guessing none were Econ majors.

Liberals/Progressives are simply a group of individuals who do not possess the courage, strength and fortitude to be the type of Americans that this country needs

Sounds like researchers looking for an easy sabbatical to crank out publications and not have to teach. Kids spend 95% of their time awake on the internet in front of screens, don't tell me they can't figure out a way for effective online teaching of lecture and seminar courses aside from labs.
To the guy who suggested pay cuts to 49k though, that ain't that far off from entry level tenure track salaries these days, and far above adjunct.
Cut bloated admin who make way above that, especially since there will be far fewer students on campus to warrant them. I'm as anti mega corporation as anyone, but lol at shaking down Bezos to prop up unsustainable university budgets for everyone to chill out and do nothing for a year.

Another alternative is to fire everyone and start over after COVID.

These people think an individual like Bezos is some lifeless cup of money to be poured upside down and emptied, not an actual, living, breathing, thinking, independent human being with his own thoughts.
Not that I like Bezos, but this dehumanizing of the rich - just a money object to extract money from - is absurd.

It pains me to say it, but at least 1/3 of my countrymen are worthless Commie pieces of zhit who should be thrown from a helicopter.
