Assuming everyone was also angry about Congress interfering with the Executive branch after the open letter to Iran two years ago.

Honestly, frick that prick McCain. He's a POS that abuses the fact he was captured, as a way to be guarded from talking bad about his actions. He got captured and made it out, great
That was decades ago. Today he is an untrustworthy POS crook who is constantly injecting himself where he has no place.

McCain is actually responsible for the destruction of FIVE US aircraft.
John McCain: Fighter Ace -- destroyed five US planes
"McCain, John. Grandson of a US Navy admiral. Son of a US Navy admiral. Fighter pilot aboard the Forrestal -- in one of the A-4 Skyhawk aircraft destroyed in the fire -- one of, if not the, first aircraft affected when a Phantom loosed a rocket on the deck (hat tip to DKos poster Timpanogus). Forty-one years ago, the Navy yanked McCain out of a burning plane -- and off the carrier where it caught fire. He was transferred immediately. The plane was recorded as a crash, credited to McCain. His fifth and final crash resulted from being shot down over Vietnam. One of McCain's wrecks is on the bottom of Corpus Christi Bay; one's in Iberia; one was jettisoned over the side of the Forrestal during that god-awful inferno that killed 134 sailors that same day, destroyed more than 20 combat aircraft, and sent the ship into drydock so long she never went back to Southeast Asia air operations."

"John McCain was training in his AD-6 Skyraider on an overcast Texas morning in 1960 when he slammed into Corpus Christi Bay and sheared the skin off his plane's wings.
McCain recounted the accident decades later in his autobiography. "The engine quit while I was practicing landings," he wrote. But an investigation board at the Naval Aviation Safety Center found no evidence of engine failure.
The 23-year-old junior lieutenant wasn't paying attention and erred in using "a power setting too low to maintain level flight in a turn," investigators concluded.
The crash was one of three early in McCain's aviation career in which his flying skills and judgment were faulted or questioned by Navy officials."

In another incident a plane he was piloting ran out of fuel.
Of course the 2 Skyhawks he lost were due to the fire on the Forrestal and being shot down, but still.

and though I have a lot of respect for Senator McCain,
What's the feeling about him from current Naval folk? My grandpa served with McCain and thought he was a spoiled brat.

McCain exemplifies all that is bad - not about elected officials -- but about idiot a-hole voters.
The North Viets put him in a body cast to improperly treat his two broken shoulders. The result is that he can't raise his hands above his shoulders.
He is still a national disgrace.

He's still respected for his time in the service, but I'm sure most have mixed feelings about him as a politician.

I still like him.
