I also work in informatics. Even though I’m no longer a dedicated developer, I have spent most of my career coding SQL, Python, and VB.
What these people fail to realize is that being a professional developer (coder) requires a strong propensity toward problem solving and logic, as well as the ability to remember syntax.
These aren’t characteristics typically found within poorly educated populations.
I wonder if these politicians aren’t conflating “coding” with various types of data entry work.
