Dubi (sic) for example is running into financial problems.

I don't think Dubai has any financial issues, but I could be wrong. I do know the % of revenue from oil production is low (I think less than 10%). They had the foresight to realize that their oil revenue is temporary, and built Dubai into the commercial center of the Mid East.

Abu Dhabi, on the other hand, is flush with oil money. For those that don't know, Dubai and Abu Dhabi are states of the same country (UAE).

How does the saying go

If you owe the bank 100,000 you've got a problem
If you owe the bank 100 million, they've got a problem

something like that

And China will get old long before it gets rich.

Of all the Nations currently "developed" or in the upper stages of "developing" the US is still the one with the best favorable long term demographics. I am no Obama fan (hell not a fan of most current Republicans either) but it is nothing to do with him or any politician.

In Russia live Russians. Any minority, from anywhere, if it wants to live in Russia, to work and eat in Russia, should speak Russian, and should respect the Russian laws. If they prefer Sharia Law, then we advise them to go to those places where that’s the state law. Russia does not need minorities. Minorities need Russia, and we will not grant them special privileges, or try to change our laws to fit their desires, no matter how loud they yell ‘discrimination’. We better learn from the suicides of America, England, Holland and France, if we are to survive as a nation. The Russian customs and traditions are not compatible with the lack of culture or the primitive ways of most minorities. When this honorable legislative body thinks of creating new laws, it should have in mind the national interest first, observing that the minorities are not Russians.”

I don't think Russia give a shite about anybody’s rights, minority or otherwise.

quote:

Russia Gun Laws
Only Russian citizens who are over eighteen years of age can own civilian firearms. Guns may be acquired for self-defense, hunting or sports activities only. Russian citizens can buy smooth-bore long-barreled firearms and pneumatic weapons with a muzzle energy of up to 25 joules. The use of long-barreled weapons for purposes of self-defense is prohibited. An individual cannot possess more than ten guns unless part of a registered gun collection, guns that shoot in bursts and having more than a ten-cartridge capacity are prohibited.
Carrying permits are issued for hunting firearms licensed for hunting purposes. People who acquire firearms for the first time are required to attend six and a half hours of classes on handling guns safely and must pass federal tests on safety rules, and their background is checked. Gun licenses are for five years and can be renewed

The Pro-Gun rights crowd are going to love this …..

quote:

Freedom to Assemble ... nope
Russian Constitution (1993) states of the Freedom of assembly that citizens of the Russian Federation shall have the right to gather peacefully, without weapons, and to hold meetings, rallies, demonstrations, marches and pickets.
According to Amnesty International (2013 report) peaceful protests across Russia, including gatherings of small groups of people who presented no public threat or inconvenience, were routinely dispersed by police, often with excessive force

quote:

Freedom of the Press... Nope
Reporters Without Borders put Russia at 147th place in the World Press Freedom Index (from a list of 168 countries).According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, 47 journalists have been killed in Russia for their professional activity, since 1992 (as of January 15, 2008). Thirty were killed during President Boris Yeltsin's reign, and the rest were killed under the former president Vladimir Putin.

quote:

Justice
Police

The Constitution of Russia forbids arbitrary detention, torture and ill-treatment. Chapter 2, Article 21 of the constitution states, "No one may be subjected to torture, violence or any other harsh or humiliating treatment or punishment." However Russian police are regularly observed practicing torture - including beatings, electric shocks, rape, asphyxiation - in interrogating arrested suspects. In 2000, human rights Ombudsman Oleg Mironov estimated that 50% of prisoners with whom he spoke claimed to have been tortured. Amnesty International reported that Russian military forces in Chechnya engage in torture.

Judicial System
The judiciary is a subject to manipulation by political authorities according to Amnesty International. According to Constitution of Russia, top judges are [appointed] by the Federation Council, following nomination by the President of Russia. Anna Politkovskaya described in her book Putin's Russia stories of judges who did not follow "orders from the above" and were assaulted or removed from their positions. In an open letter written in 2005, former judge Olga Kudeshkina criticized the chairman of the Moscow city court O. Egorova for "recommending judges to make right decisions" which allegedly caused more than 80 judges in Moscow to retire in the period from 2002 to 2005.

I don’t think anything the USA police does has anything on the Russian Counter-Parts.
quote:

Freedom of Speech ... wait it’s not guaranteed in their constitution.

As long as you don’t speak out against Putin or any Russian politician, you are fine.I guess you could use North Korea, Saudi Arabia, Cuba and China as well as model nations to follow to get your point across.

Sorry not up to date on my Middle Eastern economics. They had a crisis in 09 due mostly to over extension of real estate but they are slowly recovering now. Article I found said they are showing growth as of Jan 2014. The UAE has an interesting thing going there.

The UAE is pretty pro-western, but at the same time very Middle Eastern and nationalistic. They at one time were paying UAE citizens to marry each other because they feared the influx of foreigners was going to decimate their natural born population. Emirati only make up about 15% of the total UAE population.

Fujairah is still a shite hole though. I hated having to go through there.

I thought Fujairah was pretty cool because you get a nice change of scenery with the mountains. But yeah, it's a shithole. So is Sharjah.

Did you make it to the Fajairah Beach Hotel liquor store? Pretty sketchy place.

No we were locked down the whole time we were there. Customs locked us in the airport for about 5 hours then we took a bus on a long arse ride to the port. We then got stuck in the port for another 6 hours or so trying to get clearance to board the ship. We got fleeced for country clearance fee…it was supposed to be $50 a person but once we were there it turned into $100. We had to pay because there is no way out if you don’t. So I can't speak for the whole area just what I saw in transit. From what I could see compared to the rest of the UAE it was a dump.

I did try to get TAD orders there with the boat unit, but we lost out to a reserve unit. Would have been nice drawing $195 a day per-diem!

I only spent a few hours there, and it did look like a shite hole.

How long were you in Dubai, and please tell me you went to Barasti. I've had a good string of luck there

I was in Dubai for a few days. No I didn’t go to Barasti, it's been a long time since I went to Dubai. I'm not even sure Barasti was open in 03 when I was there. Hell they were still building the islands and the ski slope when I was there. We went to the Mall and the golf course. It was pretty amazing to see that golf course, nothing but sand and then a beautiful green course. We did a few other things but I don't remember exactly what we did. I know it was a pretty awesome experience there; they really are all about excess. I remember seeing solid gold and platinum cell phones at the mall. They had Super Cars on display like the Fords and Hondas you see in the malls in States.

Long term, I think Europe is lost.

A point of view perhaps relevant to the discussion.

The Camp of the Saints
In 2001 the Southern Poverty Law Center reported that the novel had been published five times in the US and was "widely revered by American white supremacists and is a sort of anti-immigration analog to The Turner Diaries."

In 2002 Lionel Shriver described the novel as "both prescient and appalling," certainly "racist" but "written with tremendous verbal energy and passion." Shriver writes that the book "gives bilious voice to an emotion whose expression is increasingly taboo in the West, but that can grow only more virulent when suppressed: the fierce resentment felt by majority populations when that status seems threatened."

Not if obama gets his way. He's in the process of destroying the coal industry. Figure the Oil & Gas industry will be next.

Good piece on China this morning on GPS, essentially said that China is due for a big correction sooner than later. I didnt know they have been pumping cash into their economy since 2008, think TARP on steroids with no end date.
