How great would it be if we could actually exile the people in Washington to Ukraine or Israel never to return

Exactly. Russia made a huge assault in the beginning. To show that it was a pointless fight. When it became apparent that USA was willing to fight when all hope was lost, Russia pulled back to secure its objectives and minimize casualties on their side.

Ukraine is just like the fight in Monty Python where the guy keeps losing his appendages but never gives up.

Europe sure, the US? No way.

It's a cultural problem, and as a Western people, we're in just as much trouble as they are.

Oswald Spengler wasn't the first person to write about it, but he argued that culture functioned like a living organism, with finite lifespan.

If you look at Europe and America, our basic ideas are very problematic, our liberal ethos makes us incredibly vulnerable to subversion, it both invites attack, and makes it impossible for us to defend ourselves, because our individualism prevents us from acting collectively to defend society. At the same time, the cultural institutions that sustained and protected our culture are dying. The church, which is was the single most important cultural institution we had, is functionally dead. And the intellectual institutions, our schools and university systems, not only are they no longer propagating our culture, they are actively attacking it. And this phenomenon continues, if you look at mass media, it's very anti-Western, if you look at Hollywood, which has always been an anti-Western institution, it's it has a powerful and unfortunate effect on ordinary people, and how they see themselves, and the world around them. You can't tell positive stories about who we are anymore. And look at the way people have attacked and in many cases destroyed our link with the past. If you break that link, it's very easy to destroy a people. Which is what you're seeing, and it's happened here in the US, but it's also happened in Europe. Look at how broken the people of the former West Germany are. That's cultural damage that was inflicted on them in the aftermath of WW2. But that is unfortunately emblematic of the West as whole.

And you can go on for a long time with this, rattling off the evidence of cultural decay, and our relative weakness. The biggest issue here though is not that we're being attacked, you're always being attacked, it's that we're not fighting back against it, not in any meaningful way, and certainly not successfully. And this is where Spengler comes in, with his idea that culture decays over time, and societies loose their cohesion and strength. We have some particularly bad ideas that make us weak to attack, but this goes beyond that. I'll make the following comparison, and this is no endorsement of Islam, or to say that Islamic societies function particularly well, but imagine if you insulted the prophet in a place like Saudi Arabia. Horrible things will happen to you. And that's because they will do almost anything to defend their culture. That's what younger cultures do, cultures with some sense of vitality.

The Russians have a lot of problems, but they are much younger than us as a people, and the do not have the willpower issue that we have. Who knows what the future will bring for them, but think their best days are ahead of them. That can't be said of a single Western state, ourselves included.

quote:

Weren’t they already supposed to be the most powerful nation on the continent?

I submit they have been exposed both militarily and technologically.

Economically, you would have said the Germans were more powerful, and you would have stated that despite the size of the Russian armed forces, the French were better. But I think everyone, myself included, would have considered the Russians a heavy weight.

In specific areas absolutely, they had no equivalent of our JDAM kits for example, and they realized quite belatedly, that those are really useful. The Russians really do have a lot of problems, some are basic cultural ones that date back to the empire, others are legacies of the Soviets.

They'll still win though, and it's because of the most basic math in the world, they have more of everything needed to win. Their industrial capacity dwarfs the collective west, and they can build almost everything they need quickly and cheaply. Their shipyards are still a mess, because of the damage they sustained in the 90s, but that's your one exception.

At best, we can delay a Russian victory, but we can't stop them.
