My wife had never driven across the Mississippi River in Baton Rouge when I met her at 25 years old.

NEVER driven to Breaux bridge, Lafayette, Lake Charles, Beaumont, Houston or anything. She had flown to Dallas, Thailand, NC and had obviously been to Florida and Alabama for the beach.

But this still blew my mind.

It REALLY fricked with me when I had to explain why those fields were flooded and why they had traps in them. Holy shite Nola. You really fail these kids in educating them about your own fricking state. She’s a Dominican grad too

Living in Nola is a tradeoff. But the good greatly outweighs the bad.

I just spent the last week in Houston and Dallas. If I moved to one of those I would just be trading one set of problems for another, and some of the problems wouldn't be solved in the first place.

That is true. For example, I have to look for an excuse to go to the West Bank or Chalmette--ordinarily I would never ever have a reason to go to those places. Hell, I have only ever been to Baton Rouge twice, both times for LSU games.

I had a coworker from New Orleans metro come to BR for a work interview. I drove him around downtown and he pointed to the State capitol building and asked me what is that tall building ???????????you cannot make this up

Houston is like NOLA but without any advantages:
-still floods
-still gets hurricanes
-hot as hell
-still crime-ridden

But it also sprawls like Los Angeles and you have to drive hours to get anywhere.

Plus, having an actual NOLA address commands a degree of respect when talking with outsiders.

I would feel sorry for you.

The guy you’re talking to is a transplant from somewhere who has been in New Orleans for about 5 years and thinks he’s fully immersed. That’s basically all New Orleans is now. Hell, I was sort of that too, but I had plenty of connections otherwise.

Now I’m just trying to find a way out. But NOT to the Dallas suburbs.

Depends on where in NOLA. Uptown, sure. Uptown sucks and is full of leftists, none of whom are from there. But, say, lakeview, is all native New Orleanians, although granted, most middle-class natives are on the North Shore now.

Ah dunno. Mavbe it's just an individual thing.

As elementary as how one reacts to an atmosphere that's developed basically telling him he really shouldn't live here anymore since we own it and run it now - and looking for as much catchback as we can get.

Your historical icons are just a start.

What I am saying is that covington/Mandeville/Slidell is loaded with these McMansions where all of the houses look the same, no trees in the neighborhood, etc.

While there are some subdivisions that fit your description there are many that do not. For example TCE, Beau Chene, Brady Island, the towns of Covington, Abita and Mandeville and many more.

You couldn’t pay me 1 million dollars to move to that complete shithole, it used to be a nice place to visit and spend the day on the river walk and hit a few bars in the quarter. The inmates run the prison now there thanks to wokeness and dimocrat rule and corrupt politicians

have never set foot in covington/mandeville, I have been to Slidell and I imagine it's pretty similar. There's just not much there besides chain stores.

I lived in mid city. Rouses, winndixie, Whole Foods.

Chain stores.

Jimmy Johns, dominos, McDonald’s, subway, Burger King, canes and now a chic fi la. Chains…

You also had Popeyes, a Nike store, Baskin-Robbins, smoothie king, orange theory, I hop, Costco, chain gas stations, firestone, Walgreens, anytime fitness.

Chains all up in this bitch.

This is 100% false. The DH Horton Community in Slidell maybe, but Mandeville and Covington both have unique, new, old and nice places to live. Some beautiful homes in the older parts of town.

Don’t forget Madisonville, I think Covington told them no more new construction neighborhoods if I’m not mistaken so they moved up the road toward ponchatoula building their shite box cheaply built and rushed homes.

Aging parents for both my wife and me. Have 4 of them all in or approaching their 80s.

Also have two very successful companies thriving in New Orleans that afford me a great lifestyle in a pretty safe area. 4 kids in private schools they enjoy.

But we hate it here. It’s not as simple as this board makes it out to be to just leave for a lot of people though. Very hard to abandon your parents in their 80s.

Just waiting for the wife to retire in a couple years time and the house goes up for sale and the move will be made to a rural area where I can't reach out and touch my neighbor's house right off my driveway.

If I wasn't married, I'd have been long gone years ago and living the life I long to live with a few acres of land, house close to maintenance free as it can be and no traffic right outside my door 24/7.

This is what I did, after traveling around and getting out of Nola I was like frick that place I’m going to go get some land where I can’t see or hear my neighbors. Where some homeless guy isnt asleep on a bench outside my house. Where I don’t get harassed pumping gas or buying groceries from completely shite lazy frick head homeless men. And where kids don’t kill your grandparents trying to car jack them.

Also noticed when a road gets repaved it’s done in a couple of weeks. They don’t rip the shite up then leave it for 6 months.

I’m like a sideshow act in my hood.

There are some more conservativeISH pockets of the city, though.
