SW Shield 9mm easy to carry and rack. A good 357 revolver if you want point and pull.

AR-15, Remington 870, full size semi-auto 9mm pistol

If it's for home defense get a good quality shotgun. If you are looking for concealed carry I use a S&W 9mm shield.
ETA If you do go the concealed carry route by all means get Firearm Legal Protection. It's about $200 a year but if you ever have to use your gun you will need them.

At minimum, go to your local gun store that has a range, make a purchase and fire off some rounds around a range safety officer.
In general, its NOT a good idea to go carrying something you are not competent with.
I'd recommend a Mossberg 590 with some 4 shot and a S&W Shield with DEFENSE rounds. Do not use range ammo for defense and vice versa.

Shotty for in the house and a pistol to carry.
When picking out a pistol what i was taught to do is point the pistol at a target, close your eyes for a couple seconds, open them and see if you're still on target. If you're not still on target the pistol is too big for you. I prefer a .38.

Thanks for all the feedback. Wasn't sure about shotgun vs pistol for home defense but the consensus is pretty clear there.

Which is that both are a must have for home defense

And if you ever have to shoot a firearm indoors or behind a barrier, you'd better damn well know whats behind the wall or barrier.

Go to a range that rents firearms, take a friend who knows how to shoot, and also let the range master know you're new and inexperienced.
Test guns multiple times over the course of a couple of weeks.
Buy your favorite.

Any firearm is a poor choice for an untrained, afraid user. A competent shooter with a .22 pistol is better off than someone untrained with some 00 buckshot.

I'm assuming this is for home defense.
Any full size 9mm pistol. Most people would recommend a glock 17
If you want a shotgun and are willing to break out your check book, get a benelli M4
If not get yourself a regular tactical shotgun. The mossberg 590A1 is a good one.
The reason you should get a tactical shotgun over a normal shotgun is the shorter barrel. It's hard to move around your house with a standard 28 inch barrel. Much easier with a 20 inch barrel. If you do get a standard shotgun, grab a youth model. The shock is shorter so the overall length of the gun is shorter.

Disagree. You should practice with your self defense rounds (assuming they are allowed at that range) at least once a year. All rounds shoot differently.

Also, for God's sake, remember your an individual with a gun, not a cop. You don't get to shoot people for breaking into your truck, or go all Rambo if stuff starts to go down. You pull if your life is in danger AND you can make a positive difference.
