but this isn't doing irreparable harm to children.
Quarantining in and of itself may not be, but virtual learning is. That’s my fear, that the quarantine numbers will get so high (arguably unnecessarily) leading to a shutdown.

I have heard that our local system is on the verge of going virtual not because of students being out because we cannot find enough bus drivers due to covid. As of last night, we had 26 out of about 60 total drivers out either in quarantine or Covid positive. If they can't get the kids to school then they have to bring the school to them.
I agree that most students should be in school with the OPTION to mask. If we have to shut down because of a lack of bus drivers, that would suck. Virtual learning will never replace school not because of the teachers, but because of the social interactions, kids need to become functioning adults. This total disruption of schools has caused much harm to children.
I will say this, though, Local School districts are stuck between a rock and a hard place with this crap. They better not have a student or employee die while not following the protocols demanded by the Governor and BESE. If that happens to the right person there will be plenty of lawsuits and the district won't have a leg to stand on in court. They know this is harming children but they have to submit to the mandates. On the other side, parents are demanding that the board ignore the governor's mandate and make masks optional. It's a cluster frick any way you look at it.

So, what is the medical rationale to keep a 5 year old out of school who is perfectly healthy?
None. Quarantining the asymptomatic is stupid.

There will likely be a surge of quarantine in the early weeks. Give your board and leadership positive support for getting kids in face to face learning.
Mississippi was hyperventilating over 20k kids in quarantine across the state. It’s less than 5% of their school population.

That’s prudent advice. Our super actually made asymptomatic quarantining optional to begin with, but got overruled by the board. She tried.

We had a group of parents begin the full-court press on our board and headmaster back in June.
Respectful, reasoned and focusing on the kids.
It’s easier dealing with private school where you can pull your kid out and immediately hurt the bottom line. But we focused on social outcomes and community as our points of emphasis for the driving forces in articulating policy for the new year. It worked. Masks optional.

Yeah even our school - public - is mask optional. I just wish they could simply say if you’re not sick, you can come to school.

I got one better than that...
Our high school just went virtual for 2 weeks due to case counts. BUT, the MHSSA says that sports, band and other extracurricular activities are still a go! The band alone is 160 kids! They were practicing football, running track and marching for the band yesterday and are scheduled to entire 2 weeks the school is virtual!

That’s exactly what our schools did last year at times, too. The whole thing is shot full of holes like this.
