This.
The public schools are saying that they can’t make them actually be graded because some kids don’t have access to internet. Tough - make their parents enter the 21st century. And if the kids don’t do the work arrest the slacker parents.

What is this union that went on strike? What was their grievances? You seem upset at a specific union and want to throw the whole profession under the bus.

hell look at the news over the last few years, Chicago, OK, many across the state. I have teacher friends here in NC got a big raise and still complained they needed more money.

Oklahoma teachers were right in their grievance, they handled it wrong imo (which I posted earlier ITT) The Governor and Legislators basically cut funding and lowered pay/benefits with no bargaining. I have friends that teach in OK and did teach in OK who are strict Republicans and walked out without hesitation. It was a bad deal by everyone.
You may want to look deeper into that situation before blaming the teachers solely on that one.
Chicago I have no idea nor do I care, since I am not up there.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say some of those inner-city schools in Chicago, Detroit, and LA are not ones where your little 22 year old girl fresh out of college would survive.

No, I don’t have a girl. I’m positive none of the Graduates in my area could handle those inner cities you mentioned. Most 22 year olds don’t go to those inner schools from my area. They go to my Title 1 type school district, that is full of poor, Hispanic, and parents that are in meth trade.
Then after 4 years they move into the Big 4 districts

At the end of the current school year, why not? If private companies are laying off employees, suspending their pay while their job is shutdown or just flat out laying them off until they are needed again, then why can't the same be said for teachers whose pay comes from the taxpayers? Suspend those summer months paychecks and save our governments a shite ton of money since we are in dire straits economically presently. I'm sure there are many, if not all, state governments whose coffers are being drained because of this virus scenario. Well here's a solution to make it less drained.
You apparently don't know how teachers pay works. They get paid for 9 or 10 months (depending on the district). The teachers themselves get to decide if they want their salary spread across the entire year. So taking away their pay (that's already earned) is theft.
If you want to take away supplemental pay from required continuing education, that's a different discussion.

The salaries that need to be suspended at schools are ADMINISTRATORS. There is nothing to administer when the school is closed.

Maybe you are not understanding what he is saying. The teachers have a contract and choose to get paid over 12 months instead of 9.5 months.
About 10+ years ago teachers actually had the option of 12 paychecks or 9.5 paychecks. Now Alabama does only 12 checks.
And for the record my wife is still working. She has a virtual classroom set up with links and videos. She has a class schedule for them to log in and do discussion.

They have a signed contract
The guv cant enter into that contract and then deny their right to work, based on an unproven computer model. Wont hold up in court. La ends up paying the salaries anyway, plus the court costs

disagree with your premise but agree that they should be run like private schools. Locally the private schools have innovated and are providing a high level of education despite the circumstances. Public schools have done a terrible job bc they know they can complain and they’ll get paid anyway. Private schools have to work hard to maintain an attendance. That being said I think public schools should be held accountable to maintain their pay. If they don’t then they can’t get paid for nothing just like the rest of us.
Private, Parochial, and Boarding are three different kind of schools.
My guess is public, rather than public charter schools will suffer the most.
Parochial schools(what Louisiana people think are private schools) will be fine.
Personally I’d like to eliminate all the laws and concepts regarding public education. Let’s get rid of it. It might be the most of our socialist institutions.
