When will receipts be right at 20% of GDP?

Always.

Hauser's law is the empirical observation that, in the United States, federal tax revenues since World War II have always been approximately equal to 19.5% of GDP, regardless of wide fluctuations in the marginal tax rate

If you ever complain again about it, youre a massive hypocrite.

If you mean Hamilton and Andrew Jackson, I basically align with their point of view of using tariffs to fund the federal government.

Income taxes are way more communistic than tariffs.

Tariffs are socialistic. Govt propping up select industries and companies by taking from the worker.

Again, if Trump came out against them tonight, y'all would be 100% free market tomorrow.

Yall would be better off subsidizing worker pay than taxing workers to support corporations.

When we lower all working regulations, minumum wage laws, environmental regulations, etc to meet China, then well talk eliminating tariffs.

If you pair those tariffs with economic incentives to American companies to return to manufacturing in the USA, it most certainly can create a boom.

A boom for the unemployable lower class, but inflation for everyone else, which will hurt the actually productive parts of our economy (by diverting spending away from these areas to the lower-levels via price increases of those goods due to the tariff-based redistribution).

It’s definately helped shielded a isht ton of inflation from consumers. A tee shirt costs about what it did in the 1990s. If it were made here, it’d be 3-4x more.

Less business opportunity.

You would be shocked at how many "American Made" products you own with Chinese components.

Smart businessmen utilize cheaper imports as components.

They’ll still be unemployable. Just more expensive to support.

No. You just wouldn’t be able to afford clothes. Just like the old days

I remember when it was fairly common to sew clothes at home. because it was significant cheaper than buying them. Does Walmart even sell clothes patterns and cloth anymore? (honestly do t know)

In addition, at the time, America was the net beneficiary of foreign capital investment, which resulted in the trade deficits that Trump so hates today. This inflow of global capital contributed to a burst of new technology and ideas, all put to the test in a free market.

Good points. It should also be noted that Great Briton was free trade in the 19th century which allowed the USA to charge tariffs without any retaliation from a large trading partner. That would not happen today.

In certain pin point cases, selected tariffs to protect specific key industries might be beneficial. But the general rule is that tariffs cause economic pain.

bingo

Incomplete libertarian policy is worse than full socialist policy

Allow free immigration + welfare state =shithole

International free trade + massive government regulations = losing all your industry to communist and/or third world countries

Yall sit on your ivory towers with your idealistic bullshite but your way leads to implosion. You cant just be a consumer economy indefinitely. It only works now because the government subsidizes it with make believe money.

People like SFP and Roger and desk jockeys who havent built or produced anything in their whole life. Of course they think the status quo is the best

You forget one very important fact: Trump used tariffs in his first term and used that to negotiate trade deals and lower prices. The US economy thrived.

Oh, and for you guys that love this Democrat talking point - Biden left those tariffs in place.
