What in your mind would NOT be a slim margin? Are you saying the Senate would have to be like 70/30, the house 300/135? I mean its all relative so what would you consider a wide margin and when was the last time that was achieved.

I've listed several examples.

With which of those do you disagree?

I thought they were all kind of shite, to be honest. I mostly couldn't even figure out what you were getting at.

Eric Adams?

I'm bored with this anyway. You're not convincing me that "the Republican base" is embracing "collectivism" somehow now more than ever. If you really think that, you are seriously missing the dynamic at hand. I understand there are still people who are, but more seem to be coming around. You think Ron Paul is being hoodwinked?

Thats the entire basis for Trumps tariffs. Society over the individual.

You once believed this too as did most on this board when Obama put out tariffs.

So how is Trump any different than Ronald Reagan in that respect? Reagan oversaw a massive increase in government spending and tripled the Federal Debt, from $900 billion to $2.6 trillion. After WWII, it had taken 3 decades of government spending for the debt to be tripled, yet Reagan did it in a mere eight years.

Because Reagan faced two circumstances that are simply different from Trump.

1. BECAUSE populism hadn't taken over both parties yet, progress was still made by way of making compromises with the other side. Much different than today, wherein leaders simply (temporarily) move the football by Executive Order, by refusing to enforce federal law, by attaining enough of a majority that they can simply ram stuff down their opponent's throats, or by using judicial activism to end run around Congress.

So Reagan had to prioritize and pick his battles and give ground to get ground. And his most important battle by far was...

2. Defeating the Soviet Union, which was the biggest threat to American safety of the 20th century, and it's not close. And not just to us, but the whole world.

You know that the majority of the increase in spending was for the DOD, right?

He outspent the Soviets and won that war without ever having to fire a direct shot.

It was possibly the single greatest achievement of any POTUS. And it doesn't violate the conservative principle of small government (in so far as it was spent on defense), because conservatism has historically approved of a strong defense as a legitimate government function.

As to the rest of the spending, see #1. He had to capitulate to some compromises in order to get the defense spending.

Sorry.

I overestimated your intelligence, then.

Probably best to leave it at that.

We have two big tent political parties in this country. Both of them are always going to be divided at some level.

He's tasked with recommendations to cut govt. Not expand with tariffs and MAHA.

I give Paul and Musk 6 months before Trumps done with them.

What % of votes from Republicans did Trump get?

There isn't a divide. There is a diversity of opinion, which is what happens if you are normal people. The left has no diversity of opinion. Why do you want us to be like the left?

Do you not think conditions were different then?

I can prove it if you'd like.

That only works to point out hypocrisy if there really are no substantive differences.
