Of course they do.

For me, personally? B

I took unemployment benefits for a little over a month when I was laid off back in the early 2000's. It was a pittance compared to what I was earning, and then there's health insurance, and the fact that I was bored out of my freaking mind with no job (my house was insanely neat, organized, and fully-functional, though).

I can't speak with certainty for anyone but myself. The system worked for me, giving me enough income to pay the basics while I hit the pavement to find a suitable new gig. But would the same system cause someone else to think, "Hey- I can just live on this for as long as they'll let me,"? Yep- someone is always going to find the angle(s) to abuse the system.

I would taken a job had I been offered one way before that. Actually, I interviewed for one and was offered the next week. Interviewed second time over a cell phone while sitting in my 96 degree car on the side of a highway speaking with a guy with an English accent from London. Could hardly hear but 3 years later still here. I am sure my mother in law would have made sure we ate. But as one who has been there. never again.

If the benefits are the same, someone who was making over $100,000 a year will be more inclined to look harder for work to maintain his current lifestyle.

Someone, making minimum wage has no incentive to look for work.

This is what I was thinking as well.

Honestly, I think it all depends on the individual and their work ethic.

For someone who's pay ceiling is basically minimum wage and is receiving other governmental assistance, then A would be my answer.

For someone who just lost their 70k per year job, I would imagine, unemployment has no effect either way.

Nowadays, A.

Back in the day, perhaps B. I seem to remember a time when it was considering shameful to be on welfare, food stamps, unemployment, etc....not for all, but for many.

Food stamps and all that crap is practically glorified now.

But now ... I'm convinced ... A ... no doubt in my mind.

Thank you. I appreciate your candor. The point is, I'm certain if the benefits had been cut off you would have taken anything from sweeping out a warehouse to washing cars to feed your family.

A. Yes

I do believe it can be hard to find a job that pays enough to pay for day care. But I would rather pay for free daycare than unemployment benefits for a long period of time.

Had those benefits ended would you have starved or taken a job that may have not been your most desired? Or was there simply no jobs whatsoever in the NY area?

I work with a guy that got laid off from a good job, he substitute teached at several different schools and delivered pizzas at night before he came to work with us because drawing unemployment was shameful to him. He's the exception and I applaud his efforts.

Again, why don't we just increase the oversight over people collecting in order to ensure they are looking for work actively? Why cut off benefits to everyone because of a few bad apples?

But y'all don't propose that ever you just oppose the extension or propose cuts or things like that.
Who is y'all? I take it you are referring to pragmatists?

I answered the poll question based on human behavior and my perceived notion that people are far too hooked on entitlements.

This extension is just a ruse for Dems to deviate from their pathetic job creation record in order to keep feeding the class warfare meme they play ad nauseam.

Since you can't run on JOBS JOBS JOBS... seems to work out well for them.

it would be ridiculous to pick an arbitrary, one size fits all, timeframe for a question like that.

First I think it's more than a few bad apples, I'll be conservative and say 40 to 50%. I'm not advocating doing away with it totally, like most in here I think the amount of time you can be on it should be scaled way back. I would say cap it at 6 months and then each subsequent time you go on unemployment should be for the amount of time you held your last job up to the 6 month cap. I also believe the taxpayers shouldn't pay for more than 2 kids per chick but that's just me.
