If his claim is that DeSantis messed up, he has to make that case based on what happened in FL, against some sort of standard - a textbook, established procedures, reading of the facts and some logic, etc. The standard he used was NY and Cuomo, which was/were awful and murdered people. When you use something as a standard, by default you are propping it up, elevating it, saying it is something others should strive to emulate yada yada yada.
Trump knows this and he's trying to weasel out of his comments, just like his tap dancing with the vaccine.
He can't stop from stepping on his crank.
I said this months ago - all this covid stuff was going to be like an albatross around his neck. His ego refuses to allow him to make a mea culpa and move on.
You can't run an 18 month campaign by constantly "clarifying" your remarks or issuing qualifiers after the fact. He's just burning down his own campaign, just like he sabotaged his own presidency.

Right. And where your analogy breaks down is that the Republican response to Covid should have been focused on liberty and freedom first. And Trump was attacking someone who actually tried to do that. Certainly better than Cuomo did. And instead of focusing on actual ideas, Trump is just shitting on a political opponent using any means necessary.
If you still want to parse that and say “but he didn’t really say Cuomo was great,” then sure. You win that point.
