Wasn't it the south who fired on a United States Army fort that was garrisoned by soldiers of the United States Army?

That's still not treason. If the seceded states were still part of the US then firing on Sumter was sedition. Now actively seeking aid from Europe would have been treason, but if there's no foreign power involved there's no treason.

Depends on how you look at it. And levying war against the government is treason.

There's many reasons why trump is so popular with the proudly stupid.

I'd say that stupidity works both sides of the political aisle. Many Obama / Hillary voters likely couldn't tell you the difference between Andrew Jackson and Stonewall Jackson. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if some couldn't tell the difference between Andrew Jackson and Michael Jackson.

No, it's not. The Founders established a very strict definition of treason because of the British tradition of throwing the charge around so cavalierly. Under the Founder's definition there has to be a foreign power involved. Not that it matters really, hanged for treason or hanged for sedition you're equally dead.

I just go by the Constitution.

quote:

Article III, Section 3. Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying war against them, or in adhering to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort. No person shall be convicted of treason unless on the testimony of two witnesses to the same overt act, or on confession in open court.

Trump started reading HW Brands biography of Jackson but clearly didn't finish it

It's a really good book btw I am almost done - definitely some parallels between Old Hickory and God Emperor - especially regarding their elections.

The chapters on Jackson's role as Gen in the Battle of New Orleans is amazing. If there's ever a plan to remove his statue in N.O. I will be down there defending it.

Yes, Donald. Because an unrepentant slave holder was surely the man that would have kept the country united.

That is precisely why Abraham Lincoln is the worst president in U.S. history. A truly great president would have avoided the death of 620,000 American lives. Slavery would have died on its own accord especially because of technology and morality...like it did in every other western and South American country.

lol whut? Franklin Pierce and james buchannan are the two mostly at fault for not averting war.

No it isn't . Words have meanings. Sedition is the word you are looking for. Treason is conspiring with a foreign power against the US government.

Have you not read this thread? Jackson did keep the country united. His strong stance towards nullification caused several Southern states to back away from their support of South Carolina and eventually made South Carolina give up the cause as well.

The whole point of it was to keep black people from voting its not like they were making cajuns take the test.
