re: What is stopping Russia from using high altitude heavy bombers on Ukraine?

They've been using the Tu-95s and Tu-22s pretty regularly but for the most part are not flying into Ukrainian airspace. I think there are a couple of documented instances where they've used the Tu-160, but I would have to confirm.
But ultimately, it boils down to:
- They don't have very many of them
- Their logistics train to support them is pretty thin
- They are likely well behind where they would need to be in terms of technology to keep them in the air against a Patriot battery and the like
Russia's ground forces have shown to be reasonably flexible as the war has ground on, largely because they've been forced to be so. Russia cannot risk its air force taking the same initial beating because they don't have enough assets and they aren't good enough. Similar to having a blue water navy, a truly strategic air force takes a level of resources, organization, and innovation that eludes Russia; probably only the U.S. is currently capable of really doing it. Most of the rest of the world did away with strategic bomber programs in the 1960's and 1970's because they couldn't keep up in terms of cost and the technology curve.

It’s poker. Russia doesn’t want to show their capabilities until needed. They may be Cold War era Russia but why would they put all their cards on the table now? Russia is in a situation where they could have many countries attacking them based on American propaganda

Patriot missiles and long range soviet era air defense systems, which are perfectly capable of taking down bombers at long range

Yeah If NATO intervenes the war won't last very long. Russia would get run the frick over in a matter of weeks.
You mean the US, lol. NATO is a paper tiger without the US backing it.
If there are still people on this forum who are not aware the Ukraine/Russia war is simply a proxy war between the US and Russia ......they're not paying attention in a geopolitical sense.

Correct. Russia will not allow itself to be defeated without a nuclear war.
Some of you are insanely naive.

Is it capability? Ukraine air defense? Or political blow back if they started WW2/Vietnam bombing campaigns?

If it stays conventional this could be true, although it might not be as easy as you say. But let’s not forget—Russia could incinerate every major US and European city with the quickness.

Thanks Sloane,
I love these billy bad arses who are gonna invade and take over Russia.
The Russians have nukes that are nearly a 1000 thats 1000 times more powerful than Hiroshima or Nagasaki.......and they have a lot of them.
You think you invade Russia and "try and put Putin on trial" he wont nuke you til you glow??
More than likely, if nato gets involved he would drop a tactical on Brussels, and ask if we wanted the motherload or get out of Russia.....and we would get out of Russia.
And given the fact we let a bunch of Afghans with rusty rifles kick our arses all over the countryside for a decade......I highly doubt we could do much with Russia in functional battle.

By the way, here is the latest:
Right into the center of their line, while ukraine is wandering up in the hinterlands capturing russian trees for the press releases.
BBC did a report today visiting a training center for ukes and said he was struck by the fact that all the new "recruits" were in their 40s and 50s.
What a waste of humanity, all for a few people to get rich and nothing more.

Russia advanced on 477 sq km (184 sq miles) of Ukrainian territory in August, Moscow’s biggest monthly increase since October 2022, according to data supplied by the Institute for the Study of War and analysed by the AFP news agency.

You’re insane.
If we invade, strike, attack Russia with the intent to destroy it, topple the government, and extract or kill their leaders, they will go nuclear. You’re willing to risk the lives of millions of people and a nuclear war just because you hate Putin that much? You’re completely insane.
That anyone would think Russian leadership wouldn’t go nuclear if we attack the country and try to take out their leadership is absolutely stupefyingly reckless to me.
And why would we even do that? Why would we even think of doing that? Because of fricking Ukraine? Because we don’t like Putin?
People are nuts the way they want to play games with people’s lives. Just absolutely nuts.

You dont learn lessons well, do you?
Our "Nation building" has been an utter failure and I am not sure why you think this one would be different.

Why would Russia destroy the land that they want to occupy? They can afford a war of attrition and are doing a pretty good job at it, eliminating Ukraines fighting age men and gaining ground.
As a nice side story, China is enjoying watching us deplete our stockpiles. Of course, the MIC is churning out replacements 24/7, purely for the safety of our country.

Yeah

Your sorely misinformed.
Russia has twice the number of troops NATO has .......
NATO would have difficulty moving troops after Russia took out a few roads and railwayss.
IF the war expanded, American troops would also have problems moving troops to Europe.
Any ships used would be blown out of the water.
Things aren't the same as during WWII

They wouldn’t even make it to Ukraine airspace before they lost a number of them. There would be more patriots buzzing around than at a Trump rally. .

Russia, like the US, prefers a perpetual state of war over victory. Perpetual war gives the populace a foreign enemy to hate instead of their own overlords.

They are used as launch platforms for cruise missiles
Posted on 9/3/24 at 8:42 am to trinidadtiger
Lol.... All the overly complicated and over priced weapons we've given to Ukraine hasn't helped Ukraine much. Putin has been very patient and restrained. He never did want all of Ukraine, nor does he have any desire to attack Europe.
Too many people drink that MSM kool aid and form opinions based in the MSM propaganda.

Do you really think that either Russia or Israel won't employ their nukes before getting whacked?
Times have changed.
