Norodom Sihanouk was the leader of Cambodia. The goal was to have HIM in charge of Cambodia while using the Khmer Rouge foment a divide between the USSR and China.
As noted, politics makes for strange bedfellows.
Lastly, at this point, Pol Pot had been tried by the Khmer Rouge themselves. I haven’t seen any documentation to support this, but my take on it is that his “trial” by his comrades was part of a greater deal by Jimuh.

The 1979 trial was declared a show trial put on by Vietnam by the US.

I personally support the action taken against Iran, it can literally change the future of the world.
