Ok, of the major American professional sports, which one doesn't have a playoff?
None. Though, there are conference championships, pennants, etc. which are considered successful seasons.
quote:
How many times has the best regular season team not won the playoffs?
Fairly frequently, though the best regular season team fluctuates at about the same rate, or even more. 9 different NBA teams have had the best regular season record since 2000. 10 (on pace for 11) NL teams had the best record in the NL. 8 (on pace for 9) AL teams. 9 NFL teams.
quote:
I think you really have about the same 5 teams with the best chance every year
That's absolutely not been the case. New teams are introduced into the championship mix frequently in American sports leagues.
quote:
For example, does the KC Royals ever have a chance?
Not as long as Dayton Moore is running them. But yes, they have a stacked farm system and certainly could have a chance to win at some point in the future.

Outside of England, Italy, Spain (maybe? hopefully?) etc fans, like in America, simply choose one of the big dogs and are happier in general to see the parade of all-star rosters.
Where it sucks is for teams and their supporters who aren't in the clique. Sure leagues have traditionally been dominated by top clubs but I miss the Napoli's of Maradona and Sampdoria's of Mancini competing in Europe on a wing and a prayer but with an actual chance to win.
Absolutely this. When you say the EPL is as good as ever, you're really only talking about for foreign fans. Fans that will pick a top team and enjoy the ride. When in reality, this has led to an increase in the price of players and wages for players throughout England which has put pressures on smaller clubs. And you have some *really* talented players sitting on the bench at these big clubs who could be playing every week for other teams. Also, ticket prices have increased and soon TV will increase thanks to the huge deals the EPL got.

but every decade or so may make the World Series
That's the main difference between US sports and European sports, you can realistically have hope that your team can eventually win. The best small clubs these days can hope for is a long domestic cup run because big clubs don't care as much anymore.

Also, at least the EPL has TV revenue sharing in La Liga Barca and Real get like 80% of the money.
Exactly and that's a huge reason the divide in La Liga that's so unfortunate will continue to grow. EPL and Serie A are a bit more competitive for this reason. The same thing needs to be done with CL money.
quote:
Clearly it's not an ideal setup but those other teams have to set smaller goals like qualifying for Europe or maybe even CL. At least that gives them something to keep fighting for.
Well, CL qualifying can be a boon financially to those who go far however Europa League is total BS. It's more of a pain in the arse for clubs competing in the top leagues, especially the good but not elite ones.
The huge difference in payrolls shows up in depth so a Napoli or Athletic Bilbao that may actually go all in Europa screw themselves in their leagues and lose tons of money.
Now, if you start giving CL births to the top 8 Europa League finishers then you may have something.

Who has a better chance of winning their league?
Royals or reading? Now we're done here

Your arguments have really sucked these past couple pages.
Rays, Pirates, Nats, Orioles, A's...all been jokes in the past 10 years. All contenders this year.

And EPL big clubs are moving to have less revenue sharing so...

That's such a salient point. When people talk about the decline of Serie A from being the top league in 90s to it's current financial problems the exact trajectory you describe is often overlooked.
League is most popular around the world. Payrolls explode. Tickets skyrocket. Cable packages cost an arm and a leg. Fans begin to stay home.

A few games are left and you may want to recheck your standings for the past few years. There is one team that really doesn't belong in that group for not being a joke and one team isn't in contention.

No one's saying that, say, the Padres are on the same level as the Yankees. However, I follow the Padres (outside the top 20 best MLB franchises) and Calgiari in Serie A (probably around 15th strongest club).
I've seen the Padres play in the World Series and, if I cut back on the after hours parties, will probably live to see it again.
Cagliari. . .well maybe PSG will overpay for a player or two to keep them from going under

Yeah, the A's don't really belong in the joke company. I just put them in because of all the dumbass "Death of Moneyball" articles there were before this season (and even during the early stages when they struggled).
All those teams I listed are either atop their divisions, atop the Wild Card standings, or within 1.5 games of the Wild Card leaders.

Fiorentina:
Attaccante= El Hamdaoui (Ajax), Mattias Fernandez (Sporting Lisbona)
Centrale = Borja Valero (Villarreal), Aquilani ( Liverpool), Cuadrado (Lecce/Udinese)
Defensori = Roncaglia (Boca Juniors),
Gonzalo Rodriguez (Villarreal)
GK Federico Viviano ( Palermo)
Upgrading their medical staff may be key as they are bringing in some players with past injury issues but, overall, I like the signings. They may be a dark horse pick to surprise and challenge for the top 4-5 this year if they stay healthy.
Add David Pizarro to Fiorentina's list.

Sounds like Cavani to Chelsea rumors are starting to pick up again. They are supposedly in talks according to various tabloids. Supposedly Raul Meireles is being used in negotiations.

Chelsea doesn't have a world-class striker. Cavani could be that one for you, easily.

No use to tell him this. It is lost on him.

1. I don't think Cavani is "world-class" good, you obviously disagree.
2. I don't like Cavani.
Therefore it stands to reason I don't want him coming to my team. Not sure why that is hard to understand.

Why don't you like Cavani? We can disagree whether or not he's world-class, that's pure opinion. But 66 goals in 97 appearances for Napoli is ridiculous.
But what do you not like about him?

I just don't get it. I think you may be the only Chelsea fan in the world that doesn't want Cavani.
