Rodgers did good with our payroll this summer

I read that almost 700k/week was taken off of the books by offloading:

Maxi
Kuyt
Aquilani
Aurelio
Bellamy

Along with a couple smaller players. Now we just need to get rid of Joe Cole and that number will rise to over 800k.

This summer:
Poldi - 11 million
Giroud - 13 million
Santi Cazorla - 16.5 million

Big signings over the last decade or so years:
Gervinho - 10.5 million
Ox - 12 million
Arteta - 10 million
Per - 10 million

Koscielny - 10 million
Vermaelen - 10 million
Arshavin - 15 million
Nasri - 16 million
Theo - 9 million
Hleb - 11 million
Reyes - 13 million

Yes they have made several Arsenal big money signings this summer but they still aren't competing for top players in the transfer market.

Whatever the fees for poldi, Giroud, and Cazorla were, that's about what we made recently on our real estate ventures in Highbury.

Our wage bill is quite high actually. We have some stupid idea that players will be better teammates if they're paid equally. Our bench guys make a lot. offloading dead weight is more important than anything re: wages.

Yes exactly, Arsenal have a low wage-ceiling and a high wage-floor. This means you end up with a lot of over paid squad players who can't be shifted and you don't compete for the top players in the transfer market.

I would consider Giroud and Cazorla top players in the transfer market. And we got them for extremely reasonable prices. Poldi, I'm less high on, but damn, the dude has 100 caps for Germany.

Rumors are that Liverpool are willing to pay more of Sahin's wages than Arsenal.

I don't think I'd consider Cazorla a top player but I definitely would not consider Giroud a top player. Thats like saying that Chamakh was a top player when Arsenal signed him from Bordeaux.

Odd rumor. all along I've read we'll pay all his wages, we were just haggling on loan fee.

Well clearly you lack some information on this subject if you are by default comparing the move to the last Ligue 1 striker we signed. Giroud was top scorer last year for the champs and was wanted by other top clubs in Europe (the reason we moved so quick to buy him was Inter was moving in). His rep is significantly higher than Chamakh's. Probably the second best striker moved this summer so far.

I'm a big Cazorla fan and think he is a fantastic player. I followed Villarreal for a few season while Altidore was there and I always came away from games thinking Santi was their best player and they'd do well to hang on to him, even with Pelligrini.

Bordeaux were ligue un champions when chamakh left for free. Arsenal tracked him for years and made several good offers before Bordeaux eventually let his contract expire. I know who giroud is he has a lot of potential and could become a top target striker but has had 1 successful season as a pro and is hardly a sure thing in the epl.

Neither is a top player. If they were they would have cost more than arsenal can afford and theyd have gone to a team that is really competing for the champions league.

You can't compete financially with united, city, Chelsea, real Madrid, barca, PSG and bayern. Deal with it. I'm not saying yall aren't signing good players but your not in the market for Europes best. I happen to really like arsenal btw there's nothing wrong with being financially viable

Young Guns says Sahin interest is because of Wilshere's injury. Song's status is irrelevant. Also doesn't think Barcelona will bid enough to make Arsene sell someone who doesn't want to leave and is under contract until 2015.

I wouldn't even consider selling Song at this point. They could offer 30 million and I'd turn it down. He had his best season last year and is a primary reason that RVP was so good. Second, only to Van Persie staying healthy.

I don't buy your rational on cost being what makes a top player (see: özil, vdv, etc etc). And nothing you said really rebutted my points on the differences between Giroud and MC. Maybe it all comes down to semantics seeing as we seem to have differing opinions on what a top player is.

The only top players who have moved so far this summer are Hazard and Drogba. Drogba is obviously at the end of his career. I'm obviously not saying fee dictates how good the player is, there are a number of things that dictate fee.

As an example: RVP is a top player. He is 29 years old, has one year left on his contract with a club that can not afford a new contract at his market value. If he is sold this summer Arsenal will receive £15-18 million most likely. If he had 3 years on his contract he would most likely cost £25-30 million. If he was 6 years younger he would cost another 10 million. You see what I'm getting at?

I suppose you can make an argument for Santi Cazorla but I don't think he'd start regularly on a team that competes for the champions league.

As for Giroud and Chamakh, I have a feeling you didn't follow soccer closely when he was at Bordeaux. I don't mean to sound condescending and I'm sorry if I'm incorrect about that.

EPL??

Because I think Lavezzi, Ibra and Silva for PSG are top players, too...

Yes I meant to or from teams in the epl. Ibra and Silva are definitely top players. I'd say Lavezzi is probably on the fringes of being a top player, a strong first season with PSG would probably put him at that level but he could get lost in the mix of attackers there.

Kagawa would be on the cusp... still needs to prove himself, but it sounds like top for you = world class...

As for Giroud and Chamakh,

The only part of the game where Chamakh is better than Giroud is in the air. Giroud has a better first touch, more accurate shot and is a much better passer of the ball. 11 assists last year is a testament to the last part of my statement.
