The homegrown rules only serve to disrespect and patronize English players when it comes to the bigger clubs. If they want EPL clubs to have legitimate English talent then produce some, otherwise the market will demand higher prices.

As far as I'm concerned, Sterling is the only young English player who has shown any ability to be world class. I have no problem with City filling a need by over paying for such a player. What he's worth to City is different than what he's worth to other top clubs. City need a direct, pacy left winger, and they got one that's homegrown and 20. I'm glad they didn't quibble over 10m pounds.
So much better and proven players City could have got for much cheaper. As for home grown we keep hearing about how amazing this academy is, then why not just put a couple of those kids in the first team to meat the quota.
49 million for potential is just mind blowing
Right now its 49 million for elite level speed, his finishing and passing are below average and he gives the ball away a lot when taking on defenders.
He is the most expensive English player ever at 20 years old. Thats insane and the 2nd most expensive British player ever.

my sell-on clause pager just went off
definitely part of the deal.
it was interesting to see the odd mega transfer back in the day with the likes of zidane, figo, ronaldo, ferdinand but it felt like the market really didn't explode until abramovich took over at chelsea and every good player's price just went through the roof. david beckham 'only' cost 25 million pounds in 2003, given all of his marketability off the pitch that price would be insane nowadays.

Like who? Reus would be in the mid 30's at least. Who else?

I'd argue the market started exploding after the Bosman ruling, and Abramovich took it to it's logical conclusion.

Julian Draxler first player who comes to mind
Posted on 7/12/15 at 3:49 pm to StraightCashHomey21
Draxler is a way bigger risk than Sterling. Has been injured more, has scored less league goals than Sterling in about 25 more games, hasn't been moved around as much as Sterling, and hasn't had a standout year other than when he was 19. And he'd easily cost in the high 20's and 30's. He's another paper player.
Does it really confound you that the price for Sterling was so high? Young English international going to a team desperate for a HG player, while the selling team would immediately receive only 80% of the fee because of a sell-on clause? Sterling is a 30 mil player who, because of a specific set of circumstances, is valued higher. There's no crime, no one is getting fleeced, and City doesn't appear to be making a mistake.

No other teams where wanting to buy him esp at that price except City bc they are desperate.
I fully understand why his price tag was jacked up but still making him the most expensive English player ever is insane.

And? They have the money to bail themselves out.

Nah, I just can't think like that anymore after all the stuff that's happened in the transfer market. It would be insane if this were one-off, but transfers at these prices are going to be the norm now. That's the new reality we live in where these teams are the playthings of billionaires.

Great player who should have moved six years ago.

Konoplyanka
Same for him, but he doesn't have near the profile.
It's not like there was another Sanchez on the market. It's fairly bare for the most part.

I forgot Pedro as well
he seems to be on the market

Dzagoev isn't moving because just like the English homegrown rules, Russian rules mean domestic players are way overpaid. That's why Akinfeev hasn't left either.

Akinfeev's also fricked himself over by performing terribly in matches the rest of Europe would be watching.

Oh god. Don't show that clip.
But Akinfeev is still really good.
