Yea I was on the (South) Texas ODP team. The "coach" (from the Texans -- Houston version) loaded the half the roster with his own players. They had a good team but they certainly didn't have 12 of the best players in the state.

Very political. Total bullshite. Also kind of meaningless because the "team" doesn't do shite together.

The quality of officials in Bama is terrible and very very inconsistent so no one knows what a foul really is here and it’s not all the parents fault. Because a card in Huntsville, is a foul in Montgomery and nothing in Mobile. Fans here expect completely biased bullshite from officials because we see it all the time. ( I have a complete film library of it with respect to some privilegeGuru and some refs on here I have been part of some legendary poorly called biased games, per coaches of other teams. In one a player actually struck an official and got a red card which they tried to overturn.)

Can confirm. And I only played two seasons of soccer with Auburn's club team. Maybe we just got stuck with the leftover refs, but it was pretty bad. A guy could go in 2-footed and not even get close to the ball with not even a foul called then a cleanly contested 50/50 would be a card (which way, we'd never know until it was shown!). I don't remember walking away from matches thinking we'd gotten hosed, just shaking my head in confusion at the randomness.

It was the same way whenever I tried out for ODP. Hubie Collins was the head coach, so he had around 9 of his Jesuit boys make the team to surround Patrick Mullins

My boy's U13 this year, so I'll take him up to tryouts...if only to get a read on the center mids he'll face at State. I think the experience of trying out can't hurt.

I think they accept everyone who wants to pay though, he won't join.

It is poorly run and the politics are worse than daddy boy baseball. Club coaches lobby for their kids and “daddy managers” doing the same. They keepv most of the same names that started the program the earliest whether others have passed them up or not. It is a shame.

Alright i have an update. Just wanna say thanks to everyone who offered advice or knowledge. Although it was ridiculously hot and humid and several refs went down it was a good time and I was able to learn a lot. I didn't grow up playing but I really enjoy being out there and being a part of the game (I try to be as little of a part as I can. My ref philosophy is to let them play and communicate with words rather than a whistle when I can.) We were fortunate enough to receive instructions from referees that have officiated in the MLS, EPL, La Liga, and CONCACAF matches. They were all really nice and helpful and although the camp was a non paying gig I feel the free instructions and training more than made up for a couple hundred bucks of game fees. We also got to officiate games with headsets and other cool things you usually dont get to do unless youre at a higher level.

All in all a great experience and I would recommend that anyone that gets a chance as a referee to go to one of these should do it. Just make sure you train outside in the conditions you will be working in because I prepared on the treadmill in the gym and struggled a bit with the heat and humidity. My conditioning was fine but I was not prepared at all for the weather. Thanks again everyone.

Since I was there as an official and completely neutral I can attest to this a little. It seemed a couple coaches did have their favorites that they would call by nicknames (assuming they were on their club teams). One of these teams was losing 3-0 and put 2 guys that had been riding the bench in in the last 10 minutes and they scored 4 unanswered to win. I heard their parents talking behind me (AR2) and they said it was the first game they had gotten in and it was the next to last day. These 2 were by far the best players I saw all week and I noticed they weren't in the final regional pool game where they select the top players from all the states and have them play. I couldn't help but think its because they didn't get a fair shot and this kinda upset me.

Eta: I don't feel like this was just a case of them being fresh either. Their touches and possession of the ball was better than any other fresh kid I saw all week too.
