I’ll never dislike a player as much as Ozil but Luiz has pretty much cemented his place as number 2.

Since nearly all of the top clubs are a defender away from making a serious title push, they will gobble up all the best available, and also raise the price astronomically. How will Arsenal improve the backline? Overpaying for some scrub is just going to make it all worse, see Kolasanic.

The move for Saliba looks more shrewd everyday.

Luiz
Holding
Saliba
Mari
Mustafi (won’t be ready in Sept)

Not saying Saliba will immediately fix the issues but if we’re going to blow our load it should be on a playmaking midfielder, especially if Ceballos leaves then we don’t have a choice. Either way we should bring one in. Arsenal created the 4 least amount of chanceS in the league last season

Sead came in on a free, though. But I agree that it will most likely be tough to sign a top defender. They may look for the free transfer route again, or buy another young but promising CB.

has he had a good year on loan?

I think he played roughly 10 games for St. Etienne and was hurt the rest of the season.

And yet his is now the 2nd most expensive left back in the prem. The management of the club has been utter shite the last couple of years.

Players tend to get higher wages when you come into the club for free. Same happened with Ramsey at Juventus. And Sead made Bundesliga Team of the Season right before he joined Arsenal.

In other news:

Shkodran had a successful small procedure to his right hamstring on Saturday. He is aiming to return to full training in October.

Mustafi not due back in training until October. Mari not due back until September. Arsenal yet to set a date for Chambers' return. Numbers already light before the new season has begun.

I honestly don't know what to say. Ever since the start of the season they knew they lacked depth and quality at center back, going so far as to panic buy Luiz, and they have been scrambling to find bodies to put at center back ever since. The injury bug at that particular position is astounding, and it just sucks seeing such a weakness and not really being able to do much about it.

Agreed. They have done some questionable business at CB since Koscielny and Mertesacker started to decline. It has been Arsenal's weakest position and the main reason they've missed out on top 4.

Since 14/15, here are the Arsenal buys at CB:

July 2014 - Calum Chambers (19) - Perpetually injured
Jan 2015 - Gabriel Paulista (24) - Solid, but sold August 2017
July 2016 - Rob Holding (19) - Injuries have halted his progress. Solid at times.
Aug 2016 - Shkodran Mustafi (24) - Frustrating for a majority of his time at Arsenal. Has had a resurgence under Arteta.
Jan 2018 - Konstantinos Mavropanos (20) - Hasn't played enough for Arsenal. Likely to be loaned out once again for 20/21.
July 2018 - Sokratis (30) - Signed the 30 year old to fix a backline that was struggling. Decent stop gap, but past his prime.
July 2019 - William Saliba (18) - Loaned back to St. Etienne. Promising future, but he was injured a majority of last season.
Aug 2019 - David Luiz (32) - A walking talking penalty giver/red card receiver. This signing still makes me scratch my head. Panic buy for sure.
Jan 2020 - Pablo Mari (26) - Looked good in limited minutes, but like other CBs, has been injured since the restart of 2020.

I doubt we buy anyone. Our back line improves with a healthy Mari and healthy chambers and pray that salina can defend.

Other than that, we need to off load several. We really need a cm, hopefully with better play there our cbs have less pressure.

I’ve been thinking Chambers should start since before he went on loan to Fulham.

Our biggest needs:
CAM
CB
CM (1-2)
Dani to stay

Then you would need clarity on the ST position between Auba/Laca

I agree that we desperately need an attacking midfielder. Also the club is trying desperately to sign Auba to an extension. I believe if he signs we sell Laca if a club offers a decent price. Guendouzi is gone. I'd imagine Sokratis will leave too.

Imo chambers was our best defender at cb and rb until he got hurt. Bellerin was also out and I thought AMN was a lost cause because he didn't want to play there even though it's obvious he has all the attributes to play wing back.

Saw ozils agent saying he's staying til 2021. How one of my favorite players has become my least is crazy. I know Arsenal gave him that contract and he has every right to see it out. But just go play somewhere else. You aren't going to lose money.

Sokratis

Supposedly he wants to stay and fight for a place. But Arteta must not like him. I honestly wish he had gotten some more pt recently. I'd probably rather a back 3 of him, Luiz and Tierney for saturday over any combo that could have holding or kola.

Does anyone really know whats going on with Ozil?

Initially he was held back due to the mafia, now it can't be injuries, and we haven't heard of him having a falling out with Arteta like Guendouzi.

Agreed. Problem is we have 3 injured CBs so it would be difficult to buy/sell someone and then the position lacks any depth now but is overcrowded come October.

Guendo should be gone and looks like we won’t be able to get rid of Ozil unless someone is willing to take a percentage of his wages. I’d love to offload Kola and Sokratis but they don’t have much value and they are on high wages. So we will instead have to generate income from selling some other players like AMN, Laca, Torreira etc,
Also the Coutinho loan rumor is interesting for him to temporarily come in as an attacking midfielder.

I thought Ozil was in the doghouse for effort issues
