It only makes sense. We could finally have a product that challenges Euro.

The 2016 Copa America was fantastic. I loved every second of it. Playing Brazil and Argentina on a consistent basis would do wonders for the popularity of the sport.

As it stands now our only competition is Mexico and whatever other Central American Team has a good stretch(right now it's Costa Rica but Honduras has also had a good stretch).

Conmebol only has 10 members so it would bring the total to 51 from our current 41 members.

Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay are the historic Powerhouses, Chile Paraguay and Ecuador have improved in recent years. But I don't think it would affect the US dramatically as far as qualifying goes.

Europe gets 13 teams in and they have 55 members. With our 51 members we could expand our qualifing number to around 10. I think Brazil, Argentina, US, Mexico, Paraguay, Chile, and Uruguay would be almost automatics with teams like Costa Rica and Ecuador battling it out. It really only hurts the Central American Teams in this instance.

What are your thoughts? Are you up for a North and South America Super League to challenge UEFA?

Consistently qualifying for the World Cup is the best bet to grow the popularity of this sport.

Merging significantly lowers our chances to do so.

So, no.

Eh fine. A Panamerican Tournament needs to happen then.

Why would South America want to do that?

USA would never qualify for a World Cup

I'd be ok with it starting with qualification for the 2026 WC.

Looks like you're wrong in this thread, too.

Playing in Azteca is bad enough, I'd want no part playing in Bolivia 2 miles plus above sea level. Never mind that the US would be sacrificial lambs to the big dogs, but getting any points away at a South American country would be brutally tough.

This would only help concacaf

Conmebol doesn't benefit from this

This

Go look at the US record playing some of the so called minnows in South America. Even with 8 or so spots it would be real difficult to qualify.

We would have closer to 12 spots.

How do you figure? Concacaf has 3 1/2 right now and Commebol has 4 1/2. I can't see FIFA adding 4 spots just because they've merged.

There's only 1 more cycle under the current format. For the 2026 WC, both CONCACAF and CONMEBOL are getting 6 spots each. I like our chances of being one of the 12 best teams in a unified American confederation.

I don't think the US would have any problem qualifying. This would probably not pass because the Central American Countries would be mad that they wouldn't qualify.

Remember Conmebol gets more slots on the current format than Concacaf does yet Concacaf has 41 teams and Conmebol has 10.

This could also have a good impact on the MLS as the champions league would now include South American Clubs. Now it still won't be anything close to UEFA but it's something.

However even if this doesn't work out. I do think that the Gold Cup and the Copa America need to be replaced with a Panamerican Tournament hosted every 4 years in the US(and it needs to always be in the US). The 2016 one was so successful. I think it would be a hit.

I haven't seen that but if Concacaf receives 6 spots for the World Cup the region will be embarrassed by teams 5 and 6. Look how Honduras, Jamaica, T&T have performed in the last 5 or so World Cup's. It's not pretty at all.

The WC is expanding from 32 to 48 teams.

Which is why this has been getting some buzz the past few months.

More spots means more teams and an almost impossible scenario for the US to not get in.
