I didn't like it when it went from 24 to 32; 48 will be a joke. FIFA just wants that cash. The level of play will take a big hit. Now I can't wait to see that juicy Saudi Arabia v New Zealand match

The reason this won't work, and will never happen is distance. Just because we are on the same hemisphere doesn't mean it makes sense. A non stop flight from Dallas to Rio is 10 hours, we can't expect to do that 10 times, not to mention the smaller countries in concacaf.

I'd imagine it would be a series of group rounds where higher seeds get byes, while the minnows have to qualify.

And now imagine the players coming straight from Europe for a qualifier in Brazil and then having to fly to Seattle for another match. Then back to Europe for their club.

I think CONMEBOL would be all for it, but the smaller nations in CONCACAF would vote it down.
In 2026, there will be 6 spots for the 10 CONMEBOL and 6 spots for the 41 CONCACAF, so 12 total. If they were pooled, I think CONMEBOL would wind up getting more than their share.
Right now, in the FIFA rankings (which I know are bunk, but they are a reasonable metric for this analysis) the 8th best team from CONMEBOL is Paraguay at 36, and the 9th is Venezuela at 58. The 4th best team from CONCACAF is Panama at 59! It is probable that CONMEBOL would grad 8 of the 12, and possible that they would get 9, leaving only USA, Mexico and Costa Rica. No way that Panama, Haiti (64) or Honduras (69) would be for this merger.
The USA and Mexico should be for it. We will never again play a meaningful qualifier against Mexico after the 2022 qualifying cycle.
