If Chiellini and/or De Rossi are out for Italy, I'd feel more confident in a bet.

Both are pretty much game time decisions but neither are 100% even if they play. I'd imagine that even if one or both can play and considering that Abate and Barzagli are not quite 100% it may mean that Cassano has to be left on the bench as a sacrifice simply to not have too many players that may need subs. It also may take Di Natale out of the equation as well with all the subs being used for injury issues.

In theory, Germany should win this as this Italy isn't on par with, say, the 2006 squad. However, Italy will try to hit on quick one-touch passing counters and play with Germany in the midfield so an upset is possible if Italy finishes a couple of chances and Germany wastes some of theirs.

Both De Rossi and Chiellini are in the starting XI.

Yeah, more than 15 years with an Italian passport for the past 10. In fact, since moving to NY a few years back I'm still back and forth to Rome all the time.

How much time is your expert social analysis based on?

Ever meet any white supremacists in your German travels to stereotype away about or is it just fun for Italy?

Your German nationalist banter --and I assume from an American -- unfortunately plays into the exact stereotype of Germans being arrogant, self-important pricks that German friends I have complain about.

one year, worst year of my life. every day trying to be scammed over, lied to or robbed. When trying to get the locals to do anything it is always tomorrow, tomorrow.

i guess by travels you mean lived. saw more than my fair share of blood red boots and shaved heads. but as i am blond hair blue eyes and german heritage i had/have little to worry about from these types.

i always felt safe in Germany, cant say the same for Italy.

Being from the south, I hear the same thing from many people I know who've moved to New Orleans or Atlanta for a year or so. I guess it's all in your perspective, what you're used to.

Italy's not perfect by a long shot but having lived there as much as anywhere in America or anywhere else there's still a lot I absolutely love about Italy.

Lalas is an idiot. Kroos isn't a move to try to run the score up. He's in there to overload the midfield and keep the ball.

Yeah, Kroos is definitely a holder much more than creator. If he wanted creating, it would be Reus.

I was thinking the same thing. Kroos is probably the least pure attacking option Germany could put there.

Italy's lineup is playing with fire. All the injured players plus Cassano that's an automatic sub at 60-70 minutes.

I'm pissed about Ashley Young's dive to get Maggio that cheap yellow card. I'd guess that's why Italy isn't in a 3-5-2

You really have a distorted view on the game. Ozil is just as good, if not better than Pirlo.

No one is insulting the German midfield.

Pirlo has been fun as hell to watch this tourney.

Ozil has been brilliant as well. Schweinsteiger is clearly not 100%, so I have not found him quite as exciting to watch.

My top midfielders to watch this tourney were Pirlo, Modric, Ozil, and Iniesta.

Khedira has possibly been the best player of the tournament so far.
