It's apparent that trying to accommodate Messi is detrimental to everyone else more so than the other way around. Talented players galore that they can't even put on the field because they can't play with Messi.

I disagree as No one has ever complained about playing with Messi. They would not have even made it to cup without him.
This team was just poorly coached and didn’t come together. It happens look at Germany. They have a great system and young talent but this years team was not that good. Often times older players are more difficult to coach as they have their opinions and get set in their ways.

They are down with like 7 min left he loses the ball in the box and then just stands there while three French guys pass it around and watch two of his teammates come in to pressure them into a clearance

Well Mascherano was going to retire no matter what, I think. He is clearly becoming washed up at a very rapid pace. I doubt he would ever be called up again even if he wanted to, except for a testimonial or a nominal send off in a friendly.
