Except that we are the greatest nation on earth and our national anthem tune comes from a British drinking song. I just think we could have done so much better.
It's a nice tune, and it's not like all the other great national anthems were written by famous composers. There mostly just poems that caught on, and given sound to fit it relatively well.
There's no reason to go out of the way to be different. Our early settlers were British, and the tune was popular. The poem, at least the second half, is cool and certainly is unique, as it is.

Where do you think the colonials came from?

The meltdown in England will make the Rant after the Ole Miss game look like a campfire singalong.

I bet you do.

Totally disagree. Our national anthem is pretty shitty from musical standpoint.
Yeah. I mean, I love it, cause it's ours, but feel there are many better national anthems. I love O Canada, from a musical standpoint.

Agreed, but I'm no overly concerned about it. Absolutely love everything starting with "and the rockets red glare..."
I'm not saying the other songs are bad, but I prefer the poem about defending the flag to talking about fruited plains and purple mountain majesties.
True, and I do like the lyrics of ours. Just the tune is kinda meh. But still, when it's sung passionately in a highly emotional moment, hard to hold back the tears during the last few lines.

I agree that there are better ones. I just don't think that England's is one of them. I hated the tune itself when "I heard My country tis of thee", without even knowing it was the same tune as the English anthem, so it wasn't a biased opinion. I don't think much of the lyrics to the English anthem, but that's just my opinion.
As far as just tune, just based on what I've heard at the World Cup and other sporting events, France, Italy, Russia, and Canada probably have my favorites.

Agree and agree.

Our anthem is mediocre. Watch the masses sing along to "God Save the Queen" or "Oh Canada" or the stirring Frech La Marseillaise.
They all blow our anthem out of the water. We can't even sing along b/c it's so convoluted and lame. Singing "God Bless America" would be much more stirring and solidifying. NO ONE DENIES THIS!

What's wrong with the Star Spangled Banner?
I got chills listening to it. Keep in mind that this isn't a pro-America crowd, either....

Yeah, nothing like hearing English people worship a figurehead who lost power centuries ago for 30 seconds. Those lyrics really instill great English pride.
I like "America the Beautiful" more than "God Bless America," because the tune is nicer and they lyrics are better. However, I get far more pride from the Star Spangled Banner than either of the other two.
No argument about La Marseillaise, as that blows just about everything out of the water.

England thinks they've already won this thing...so if they don't win, shite is goin' down.

England fans expect this now, sort of like Cub fans. Much more rabid, but with the same jaded reactions that Leauxgan was talking about.
I was in London in 1990 for the WC semi between England and West Germany. The city was suprisingly calm after the shootout loss.

I agree America the Beautiful's lyrics are better, but I love God Bless America's tune. It ends so powerfully (which is also a reason I really like O Canada's tune). Just to give you an idea, I'm a Mets fan and HATE the Yankees, but I can tolerate them making the playoffs, usually, just because of that guy's 7th inning performance of God Bless America. I feel AtB and the SSB aren't as powerful at the end, but I agree the Star Spangled Banner gives me more pride. I really just think that's because it's the National Anthem, though. If it wasn't, I'd honestly probably say God Bless America does.

I hope so! It's time to make our mark in Worldcup! I would do anything for the USA to make it all day way!

Maybe. I, however, get far more pride out of "O'er the land of the free, and the home of the brave" than "My home sweet home."
In fact, I find everything from "and the rockets red glare" on onwards, to be awesome.
Listen to this
I got chills when the music softened up a bit at "and the rockets...", and you could hear the crowd at it's peak.

Yeah, that's the only thing holding GBA back, it's lyrics. I think it's tune is the best, though.
They're all awesome, though, in their own way. I was at the US-Mexico match last year here in Columbus, and it was awesome how the whole crowd sang the National Anthem at the top of their lungs. I do love it.
ETA: Just one of the main things that I wish were a little different about the Star Spangled Banner is that the "peak" of the song seems to be the "rockets red glare" in the middle. The end still isn't "bad", but I'd like if the peak was at the end, like GBA or O Canada.

Agreed. I don't like how people stop singing and start cheering "and the home of the brave." I know that's not necessarily what you meant, but it would help a lot.

If it is down to a red card or major mistake, expect burning effegies(sp?)

This has to be top three renditions
Military Academy Joint Choir and Army Herald Trumpets
Check out Jeremiah Trotter, incredible.
Using a popular English song was also a "dig" at the English.
