Got a kid that played (american) football and soccer and it was a difficult schedule to work with. It made me think - if a kid excelled at both sports and wants to continue to reasonably develop in both, can they get that development locally (Baton Rouge) focusing on soccer exclusively in the spring? He's in 5th grade and legitimately loves doing both. It just seems like trying to cram both of them in the fall is a huge pain in the arse that results in some missed practices, and vis a vis, irritated coaches in both sports.

V hard with club soccer (all year except when either Rec or school soccer seasons were…Nov-Jan). My son played club from 9 until his freshman year of high school. He played club THROUGH Jr high football, those were crazy long practice nights.

I think he really could have made something out of soccer…but at U13 he decided he didn’t want to follow that path,

Played QB1 through Jr High and then kicker/punter for varsity as a freshman. He ultimately wants to kick field goals in college. Still developing at QB as well. Likely will play most of the snaps there in JV next year.

The day after they lost in the playoffs he started soccer again, starts varsity as a freshman playing attacking mid. He’s in terrible shape after football though…it will take a few weeks until he can not have down times during the 80 minute games. He gets frustrated with high school soccer since there’s nowhere near the chemistry.

Some videos of him in action. There’s some soccer before all the football. Probably only 1 club free kick.

Higher level club soccer in Houston is basically year round now.

If by excel you mean reach a college level, my answer is no in the long run.

I think of it as Fall - Club soccer or school football
Spring - school soccer or spring practice

I played both football and soccer. Into high school, I quit football despite being okay at it, so I could focus on soccer because I had some college interest for soccer.

Ultimately, I wasn’t as good as I thought and stagnated while others around me got better. I decided to pack it in when my only offers were below D1. I regret dropping out of football to this day because nothing compared to Friday Night Lights playing with friends I grew up with.

If you think your kid has legitimate next level talent for soccer, he’ll have to play club soccer to get there. Club soccer in the fall is much higher quality than school ball in the spring. I captained my high school team Senior year after being one of the worst starters on my Club team that year.

In my opinion, travel sports are not nearly as fun or memorable as high school sports though. The main thing you will have to help your kid decide is what is important to him.

In retrospect, I think I wanted that D1 College offer just for the prestige of it. What I loved about youth sports was the moments shared with friends, not the sports themselves. So for me, skipping out on football to chase a college soccer path wasn’t the right choice.

So the team he’s on varsity for, he quit outside of school soccer. Makes sense.

He starts on varsity for football and soccer, and lettered in 8th for track (3rd place in State at 4x400)…so he’ll start varsity there too.

With the amount of effort he’s put into being the best soccer player on the field, he figured he could just put it into cruise control with that sport. I doubt they’ll play a team with a better player all the way through their 3rd straight state title (this may change over time if he stays out of club). It’ll obviously be his first, since he’s a freshman. I don’t think he counted on being this ‘out of shape’ after football.

He wants to be the #1 place kicker in the country for the 2025 class, so he’s really been grinding at that. Goes to the most important camps of his life next month. We’ll see how he does.

Being QB2/3 this year really was a lot of work…he had to stay after practice most days to kick.

I knew a guy in high school who took soccer much more seriously than football. Played year round club soccer and just started playing football as a kicker for the hell of it.

Although his brother played D-1 soccer, he couldn’t get to that level. However he ended up being a preferred walk-on as a kicker at a top 25 program. That didn’t stick, but it shows how competitive soccer recruiting is.

Even with the elite players avoiding college in almost all instances now, there are lots of gifted foreign players who want to come here and go to college for free or a heavily discounted price.

For girls, I wonder if a D-1 offer in soccer is harder than in any other sport.

He really can do it, but focusing on soccer early will be more fruitful IMO. He’ll be able to compete with very good players and get much more physical that route. He needs to be ready for JH football, know what position he wants and have the skill to earn that spot…or ready to be a full time travel soccer player at that point.

My son was tired of the weekend travel and 100% knew it.

St Stan, same place Myles Brennan played.

ETA: he’ll be in a kicking camp at Dutchtown in a couple of weeks…your neck of the woods.

He fought off the supernatural, the ghosts that shoved him down the stairs and the old Civil War generals, in full regalia, that stood over his bed watching him sleep. No, really, his mom said: The property — the one she’s standing on right now, on this sun-splashed Wednesday — is haunted, and the house was, too.
