The match commander on the day of the Hillsborough disaster David Duckenfield will face trial for the manslaughter by gross negligence of 95 football supporters, a judge has ruled.

The decision to prosecute the former chief superintendent was made by Sir Peter Openshaw at Preston Crown Court who lifted a stay on his prosecution.

An order preventing Mr Duckenfield being tried was imposed 18 years ago.

Four other men will also face trial on charges related to Hillsborough.

I know the general story but not a ton of details.

I assume people feel he was negligent and ignored warnings or something but what exactly are the charges against him?

When will the fans responsible be brought to justice?

negligence and then lying to cover it up... he's charged with manslaughter by gross negligence of 95 people... the 96th died 4 years later, so the 1 year statute of limitations had passed..

The Hillsborough verdict in 2016, exonerated the 96.. 27 years too late..

Good lord the ones that died obviously aren’t the ones who caused the problem. It was the ones packing in late bum rushing the turnstiles jamming their way in that crushed them to death who shoulder the majority of the blame

No doubt the families got screwed.

But man do Liverpudlians hold on to stuff, and I say that as an Everton supporter. People will go off on rants about Thatcher and Churchill and shite that happened 90 years ago. There was no doubt negligence involved at Hillsborough, and a lot of awful dishonesty followed, but in the end it was a tragic blunder.

I mean, they were funneled in there by police/stadium people, it's not like the majority of them bum rushed the gates or something.

But I still don't know that full blown criminal prosecution for manslaughter makes sense. Seems common in the UK though, high profile accidents are rarely treated as merely accidents.

you mean after the officials opened up more gates/turnstiles which led to the over flow of a supporters into already too crowded pens?

As a LFC supporter, I agree that it was a very unfortunate situation that was extremely, poorly managed... I have no doubts they thought they were making the best decisions at the time... for that, I'm not sure the cost... The cover up and doctoring statements, etc... is pure cowardice and for that they should pay...

Obviously a poor decision, but why did they have to open these extra gates and turnstiles in the first place?

This I agree with.

Charging them for the actual deaths though I just can't get on board with and the witch hunt needs to end.
