Mikael Lustig is Sweden's best player this qualifying campaign.

the Dutch are seriously on the brink of not qualifying for the World Cup?
am I the only 1 who would think that as a much bigger surprise than the US not coming out of CONCACAF?

You shouldn't be surprised in the slightest. The Dutch failed to qualify for the Euros even though that tournament expanded to 24 teams.
There is a serious dearth of talent in the Dutch ranks right now.

Lack of talent coupled with a massively inept FA and coaching setup at the national level for the last few cycles. It took them forever to even call up Virgil, for example, despite their defense being horrendous.

He hasn't done much this match. And now he plays club football in UAE so he's definitely peaked and headed down.
