Messi suspended for four international matches by FIFA

Lionel Messi will miss Argentina’s World Cup qualifier in Bolivia on Tuesday night after being handed a four-game ban by CONMEBOL and FIFA.
The Barcelona superstar was also fined 10,000 Swiss Francs after being reported to world football’s governing body after a foul-mouthed outburst at an assistant referee during last week’s 1-0 win over Chile.
Messi, 29, was enraged by a decision given by official Dewson Silva during the first half, and was caught on camera verbally abusing the official, reportedly declaring: “f*** off, the c*** of your mother."
It continued as the official joined the rest of the officiating team in the centre of the field at the end of the game. Messi was again in discussion with the officials and actively avoided shaking the hand of Silva. Brazilian referee Sandro Ricci subsequently pointed Messi towards the tunnel as the five-time Ballon d'Or turned shaking his head at the assistant.
-------
Argentina is currently third in CONMEBOL qualifying with five to play. Top four get in, fifth gets in a playoff. Only two points currently separate Argentina and sixth-place Chile.

I thought they played 18 total games.

The manager just said they aren't reliant on Messi, guess it's time to put his money where his mouth is

They do. They have played 13 and there's 5 games remaining.

That was my point. He said Messi was out for the rest of qualifying.

He essentially is. He's out 4 of their last 5.

You missed the original title of the thread and he has since corrected it but i was stating that he is only out 4 of 5. You are just repeating what i was inferring.

Well, looks like we're gonna find out just how "great" Argentina is without Messi.

They're in third right now and their remaining games include Uruguay and Ecuador which won't be easy points. 3-7 are separated by 4 points. If it ended today Chile would miss the World Cup. There is a possibility that one of Argentina/Colombia/Chile miss the World Cup..though it's a small one. Ecuador is the other team in that standings range and their remaining schedule is brutal. If they take 3 off Colombia today then things are going to be interesting down the stretch.

For real. It'll be very interesting to see how things go the last few games. I'm just thankful Brazil is virtually guaranteed to make it to Russia.
If I had to bet I'd say Ecuador misses out. Games against everyone in the top 6 minus Uruguay doesn't bode too well.
I wouldn't be surprised to see Paraguay make some noise though. If they beat Brazil tonight they could go into 5th.
Should be an exciting run in these last few months tbh

Wow they're in serious jeopardy of missing the WC now, if they weren't already. Bolivia has never been easy for them either and that's the weakest team they have left.

Chile's remaining schedule sets up nicely. Before this suspension I saw Ecuador missing out which is wild considering the incredible start they have. Now it's going to come down to Argentina and Ecuador. Argentina has looked like absolute dogshit without Messi. That NT is a disaster right now. Chile keeps winning against them

Ah nm damn they have a pretty nice schedule set up with Peru and Venezuela at home. Definitely see them losing at Uruguay and I don't see them winning tonight against Bolivia.

Didn't they beat Chile last week?

Yeah it was metaphorical. They've won two straight Copas against them. Made Messi retire briefly and now even in a loss, their actions led to him cursing out a ref which leads to a 4 game suspension.
