no one knows all I can do is guess.

GK: David James
Defender: Ashley Cole
Defender: John Terry
Defender: Ledley King
Defender: Glen Johnson
Mid: Steven Gerrard
Mid: Frank Lampard
Mid: Aaron Lennon
Mid: Joe Cole (normally Gareth Barry but he is injured)
Striker: Wayne Rooney
Striker: Peter Crouch

what areas the USA will have to try to neutralize to win the game

I think they will have to hold possession and keep the ball away from Rooney.

I think the USA will be able to exploit the middle of England's field, due to England starting 2 guys who would rather push up than play defense. Do you think a guy like Robbie Findley may be able to get behind England's not so fleet of foot center backs? I don't think the USA will try to keep possession, they'll probably have LD playing on the same side as Glenn Johnson who gets lost on the field multiple times per game.

Jozy is strong enough to frustrate John Terry and there's enough speed on the USA to sneak behind England, especially if England is disinterested in defense.

this is true. However, those 2 (Gerrard and Lampard) have always played in such a way and England have always found a way to make it work.
Barry would have really helped this.

I agree. I hope they are interested. It really hurt us defensively losing Barry and Rio.

I think most people would agree that Lampard and Gerrard isn't the best pairing. I think they're way too much alike to work. Teams get really vulnerable when they have a big gap between their center mids and defenders.

this is true. However, I think they are both great players and if you feel you can compensate defensively for them then you can play both of them.

Does England play against America in the counter attack? I only saw the last two games for America and it may seem they can be exploited on the counter.

Agree. Which is why Clark is going to start and sit deep in the midfield in my opinion. If Bradley pushes forward into the offensive third, then you'll see Rico drop in, in case of the counter. Australia is a quick team and we did well enough to stop their counter (except for Bornstein).

Do you try to control midfield and play 5 mids that look something like a 4-5-1? Or a more traditional 4-2-2?

I wouldn't be surprised to see the USA come out in a 4-5-1

Bocanegra - Gooch/Goodson - DeMerit - Dolo

--------- Bradley ---- Clark -------------

Dempsey -------- Donovan ------- Holden/Torres

---------------- Altidore ----------------

Which would be a good formation to counter with. I think it depends on how much Bob trusts Edson Buddle, if he trusts Buddle then we should see a 4-4-2 with the midfield resembling an "empty bucket"

I assume you are this person who was gone for a while and is now back?

I think my first day here the people of this site thought I was you or something. I was a bit confused.

Capello would never come out in this line-up. No dedicated holding player, as well as no one to distribute from the back. If he does this the US will do well to exploit on the counter.

All indications are Joe Cole will be starting for Barry.

Previews projected lineup

altidore buddle
Donovan Clark Bradley Dempsey
boca oneywu demerritt Spector
Howard
I'm not as worried now after watching buddle gomez and findley play.

I like dolo, but Spector makes since considering he has played against everyone on the England team. I woukd still like to see torres in Clark's spot. I feel like he lacks composure and is a liability out there especially if we go down a goal or don't get calls going our way.

Then they have to be starting a five man midfield. That line-up is borderline suicide. Unless Lampard or Gerrard became more disciplined defensively overnight.

which let's be honest isn't gonna happen.

From what I've read it seems to be Cole but i agree with you that if that's the case. There will be too many Mids thinking about offense and not enough playing defense. Hopefully, Barry makes an amazing recovery and plays but it seems doubtful.
