Yeah, well that was around when he got me following. Maybe it was after Euro 2008.
And they didn't start spending a ton or get good until after I followed them. They were right around the middle of the table that year.

Rooney was 17 when they signed him, same with Ronaldo. It's not like they're out spending 240 million pounds on strikers in days. There's a bit of a difference. No successful club is mostly from their academy. The academy system just allows them to hopefully get a few with some loyalty, nothing more or less.

I hung out all day on a Saturday with David O'Hara at Finn's. The guy who was Fitzy in The Departed. That mofo can drink.

Glass, put in a word to get an Arsenal legend there for us. I might have stuck around longer
As for O'Hara, I would not doubt it. That Scottish bastard just looks like he could dry up a bar.

Agreed. In my book, a player who was bought before age 21 and stays with the club for 3+ years is essentially "homegrown". For example, I consider Oxlade-Chamberlain, Ramsey, and Walcott to be homegrown Arsenal players even though they were brought up in other academies.

they were ahead. city had to catch up (in a price-inflated market, mind you)

well kun, nasri, balloteli, etc weren't exactly old
Man U paid 25.5M pounds for nani a few years back and just signed ashley fricking young in the offseason
let's not act like Man U doesn't throw money around

Yeah, United = City in terms of spending. Whatever makes you sleep better at night.

What have I missed here, seeing numerous multi-quote posts arguing something? Nothing but SAF's tactics can be in question from this match right?

city has spent a frick ton in the past few years trying to catch up with a top flight roster
man u has consistently spent a frick ton over the past 30 years or so

it's OK to spend a frick ton of money if you do it like Man U, but if you don't have the advantage of having lots of money for decades to build up a consistent squad, it's horrible to spend a frick ton in a smaller period to build a team to compete with Man U
basically, whoever got there first (decades ago) deserves to be there, and people will rationalize justifications to keep that status quo valid, while similar behavior done slightly differently is horrible and will ruin the game

I'm not buying their spending strategy. "Spending to catch up" isn't buying a ton of strikers and having to sell them off at discounted prices.
With the money City has, they could build a treble team.
Instead, they'll lose money on Dzeko and I don't know if they'll get back their 23 mil on Balotelli either.
