My problem with all of that is that United hasn't simply built up their franchise over the years by just spending at will. They, unlike City, have had several studs go through their academy, and have signed teenaged/young 20's that have basically become homegrown players, as mentioned above.
And what City's doing isn't similar behavior done "slightly" differently. United can't just go buy whoever they want hassle-free. City can.

As for the final point of contention if the spending flurry of City sees them beat out ManU for the title does that justify their small timeline buildup, i.e 1 year, versus ManU's relatively old money, i.e 5+ year, build up of the roster?

But City's got an almost unlimited supply of money, it seems. If these guys don't work out now, they can just sell them and buy new ones at higher prices. Hardly anyone else in the world can do that.

In fairness to both teams, those numbers should be larger. I would say 3-4 years for City and 10+ for United.

Their payoff may be worth it for them, but it's bad for the game. I don't know how anyone can disagree with that.

Spending more than 25 years of a multiple championship and top flight club in 4 years is absurd. Catching up and throwing money in until you get a decent season are two different things. Go look at the transfer tables for the past 10 years. United spends around 10m a year while Chelsea and City are spending 50m a year. United has also sold 2/3 of what they've spent. Wouldn't call that a frickton. In fact, they're not even top 3 in spending.

Shhh. Don't confuse folks with facts.

LOL.... where does Arsenal rank in spending?

Posted on 4/30/12 at 5:10 pm to WarSlamEagle
I just found out the score!! Thank the Lord. It's definitely not over though. Still think United pulls the league out.
I enjoy how butt hurt all you United fans are. I guess it's really hard to follow a team that wins consistently so I apologize for another club stepping on your shoes.
This is how it feels to be City, this is how it feels to be small.
frick United

From 2007-11, dead last, with a net of -£31,350,000 (£85,150,000 spent, £116,500,000 sold).
City's net is £418,870,000 in that same span, with Chelsea in second with £155,900,000.
United is in eighth with £51,600,000.

Sportscenter is totally overselling this rivalry. I mean it's a good rivalry, but it's not as big as they claim.

Not butthurt at all. Sucks, but the season is not over. I'm just making the point that United is not one of the "Let's buy the hot player of the moment!" teams. I'm not debating the efficiency even. Do what it takes to win. I'm just saying that United's success is as much good development and good pick ups as it is money spent. The same can't be said for City right now. Now with league topping success, that could all change. Oddly enough, I love watching City, even though I hate them as rivals. I just wanted to point out that Manchester United is less Yankees and more Patriots, with a legendary manager and good talent scouting. Regardless of how they did it, City and United are topping the table by a long shot. Not discrediting that, but United gets unmerited hate.
As for following a team that wins consistently, I've been a United fan since I played a FIFA in like, 97. They were good, then, as so as an 8 year old, I'm sure that's why I stuck, but I also do support Bolton and Fulham. Lastly, I feel like me heartbreaking obsession with the USMNT balances me out on the fandom.

Butt hurt? We played flat today, and City controlled the match...no one is denying that.
And you ain't small with that monstrous oil money budget, cuz.

which of Man U's players come from its academy?
they don't spend like the others and thats a fact
when they buy players it is in their younger years

If United would have won, it would've been less of a deal in the States tonight, I believe. SC hops on the big spenders' bandwagons...see the Miami Heat.
Manchester Derby isn't as big as Celtic/Rangers or Real/Barca.

No! Bro, United spends money for no reason. Ashley Young to replace a retiring Scholes (at that time) and De Gea to replace a solid and 6-7 year guy in van der Sar is the same as making it rain of the striker of the week like a stripper.

Facts don't seem to shut them up...let them have their fun tonight.

it's yalls song. United sing it, not us. City have splashed the cash on strikers sure, but look at Kompany, Lescott, DeJong, AJ11, Zabaleta, etc were all relatively cheap signings.
I guess it sucks when your owner won't invest in the club

lets not forget guys like nicky butt or the neville brothers who came through the academy or countless other players who played for united that ended up being sold or loaned out to other clubs
United might arguably have the 2nd best academy in england behind west ham
