There are a lot of things that soccer could learn from rugby, namely respecting the ref, but the problem with soccer is that there is a massive variation with regards to how two refs would call the same game. That difference encourages two things: players going down easily to ensure a foul is called where in fact a foul has occurred and to dupe the referee by play acting to ensure a foul is called. The variation and differences in interpretation of the rules of what constitutes a foul is the reason for play acting.
