Maybe like CONCACAF the best teams don't bring their 'A' teams.. Qatar obviously always does - at least this current group who play all of their league games together/against each other as well. And it was in the UAE (probably a non-factor but worth noting). Unsure why Qatar would want to come back to the next Gold Cup and miss out on their own confederation's next cup though... because they are going to miss the next Asian Cup to be in Gold Cup 2023.

This makes me ask the question.. why is the Gold Cup every two years and majority of other confederation tourneys every 4 years?

This only happens because we play the Gold Cup every two years, not four.

AFC plays their confederation tournament every four years so they always bring their best teams for that.

Australia and South Korea are both trending downward a tad after milking every ounce of their golden generations from 2002-2014.

I would assume they are going to play in both.

You got a link?

Teams have split squads for overlapping tournaments in the past.

Guess I didn't know that... I was about to ask. Makes sense as you could have different coaching staffs. So don't have a link, I think I just took that info from someone else and ran with it.

according to Wiki... the 2023 Gold Cup runs June 26-July 16... while the 2023 Asian Cup runs June 16-July 16

so yes they can run split squads... will the Qatar A team go to North America for some stronger competition or go to China to defend its 2019 Asian Cup Championship?

I’d assume they definitely bring their A team to the Asian cup and send a youthful side to the Gold Cup

ATIL the final spot in the KO round in the 2019 Asian Cup was decided by... wait for it...

DISCIPLINARY POINTS!!!!!

The 2019 Asian Cup had 4 of the 6 3rd place teams from the group stage advance to the KO round

the final of those spots ended up coming down to Vietnam & Lebanon

after Vietnam defeated Yemen 2-0 in its final group stage match... Vietnam had 3 points, -1 GD, 4 GF & 5 GA

Lebanon scored two goals after the 80th minute in its group stage finale to pull out a 4-1 win over North Korea... Lebanon had 3 points, -1 GD, 4 GF & 5 GA

since Vietnam & Lebanon were tied in points (3), goal differential (-1), & goals scored (4), it came down to the next tiebreaker... disciplinary points

Vietnam had lost 5 points while Lebanon had lost 7... therefore Vietnam advanced to the KO round b/c they didn't get as many bookings/ejections as Lebanon

FWIW... if that had been tied too... it would've come down to the "drawing of lots" as the final tiebreaker
