I definitely remember watching Euro 96 in English but I think it was PPV. I had a directv descrambler card that caught every channel. Damn I miss that shite. Copa America in English was probably 97 or 99 on PPV with the same card.

'98 with the Ronaldo saga

First WC really following the US was '02

First time having a really shitty experience as a fan of the US was '06. Remember them interviewing some Czech fan in front of the stadium before the game who predicted 3-0 CR. Thought to myself, "bullshite." Then Jan Koller fricking destroyed Onyewu

06.

We were vacationing in Boston/New England that summer. Didn’t catch any of the games until the Final. Then the Zidane Headbutt happened.

1999 Womens world cup final was the first game I ever saw. 2010 World cup was the first I followed.

Czech Republic in 06 was funny. They peaked in their game against us and were ancient by their third game.

I’m fairly young. I have vague memories at 10 years old of us tying Italy in 2006 and Zidane’s headbutt. 2010 was what hooked me on the sport. I didn’t expect to enjoy it, but I quickly fell in love with the tournament and woke up every morning to watch all the games. Great memories. Even my dad almost broke the TV out of excitement when Donovan scored against Algeria.

I didn’t grow up in a soccer family, by any means, so I discovered it all on my own. I think my generation’s kids will be the ones to turn soccer into a truly national sport equal with the “Big 4”. Nothing will ever make baby boomers soccer fans in big numbers, but Gen Y and Z are big on the sport, which is good for the future. I grew up mostly a baseball fan, and I think baseball could be in trouble a generation down the line if it can’t attract more young fans.

I'm old.
But 2002/2006 for men.
And 1999 for women.

I remember earlier WC matches, but not really the tournament as a whole... '94 was the first time I really paid attention... I had just graduated LSU and had nothing else to do that summer... so I watched a lot... Romario and Bebeto were incredible to watch..

'98 I was all in... Spent that summer in Belize and watched all the matches... Those dudes loved Brazil, so I was pulling for them... That was a fun time...

I watched as much of the ‘82 WC in Spain that was televised in the USA. ‘86 I watched every game, and had to turn the channel on the TV to the Spanish channel when the USA stations would go to comercials during the game. 82 and 86 were great tournaments and 86 is probably my all time favorite. 1990 sucked and even the final was bad. 1994 still feels like the first of the modern tournaments. They’ve been different since then IMO.

Was that the 1st one where the keeper couldn't pick up a pass back or was that 1998?

Yep, we taped every single '94 game - I can remember specifically going to buy the 8 hour VHS tapes so that we could get 4 group games on each tape.

My earliest in a way is '86 due to all the games on video tapes my dad recorded, and he would watch for yrs later. My mom nag wondering when he would toss them out. Apparently my dad set aside a little money each paycheck for like 2yrs to buy the best VCR on the market he can afford a week prior to the tourney starting. And a bunch of blank tapes.

I wanna say '94 was my first real memories. Maybe some '90, but not like '94. Obvious reasons.

1994, that Colombia team, and the dude with the crazy hair

Carlos "El Pibe" (the kid) Valderrama.

Man, individually Colombia has talent levels of Brazil. Just to many prima donnas, and individual "non-team" players. They get that fixed long term they can crack the "top teams" list long term.

1986. All in Spanish on my uncle's flying saucer satellite dish. No USMNT in that one. Cousin and I had our soccer digest mini magaizies out filling in the results.

Played hand soccer with a wiffle ball with two sideways laundry baskets as goals. Best summer I can remember.

World Cup '94 was my first exposure to soccer, ever. (As far as I recall.)

I went and bought a shitty ball and some shitty cleats almost immediately after seeing the USA-Switzerland match, and started passing to myself off of the side of our shop/storage building and started running. Dead of summer in Louisiana. I'd watch matches, then go outside and run or take touches all day, every day. I was a lard arse. I think I lost 25 or 30 pounds that summer. I think I got a "soccer drills" book or two from the library to learn something, anything about the game.

I tried out for my high school soccer team that fall and made it, having never played organized soccer. Probably made it somewhere between mercy and effort - because I was terrible, but I outworked everyone. I was Frankie Hejduk or Kyle Beckerman before they were Hejduk or Beckerman. I even scored a goal, on a rocket from just inside the 18... somehow.

That started a (now 25 year) love affair with the game. I still play. I'm still not very good, but I still outwork people. I honestly don't recall the last televised US game I missed, but I'm almost certain it was prior to the turn of the century.

I've been to many US games, MLS games, friendlies - even an MLS Cup, traveling to damned near all of them.

I've made life long friends playing the game, and gone from a fat arse to in really good shape (twice), because of a burning desire to play.

World Cup 1994 changed my life.
