Pay to play has nothing to do with it. That’s just a buzzword. There is no lack of opportunity.

I know you can't buddy. I know you can't.

Try this. Picture our football and basketball systems that consist of many of the best minds in world sports. Now make believe those sports didn't exist. Now make believe a scenario where all those brilliant coaching and training minds were involved in soccer.

Explain why were competitive in all the other sports I listed above and somehow, we can't beat nations with less than 500k to qualify for the WC.

It has nothing to do with the other sports. Even as the 4th or 5th tier sport, we should be far more competitive than we've ever managed to be.

Yet somehow we're a fricking joke in a sport that participation wise nationwide, is larger than hockey.
Not many countries really take hockey seriously. We have a few pockets in the country that love hockey, and that's enough to compete with the best.

Sure that's a dream scenario. But the way things have played out, I'm 100% sure we would have wasted the athletic potential of the players. If everything was different then I agree. But right now athleticism is irrelevant to our situation.

Man, you sure got me on that one. So in the history of real, world class track athletes that have broken real records, about 99% have come from America. You choose the one extreme physical outlier and you think you have a point.

exactly.

growing up dirt poor in Sao Paulo u can walk down the street and find a pickup soccer game to jump in at all hours of the day

growing up dirt poor in 99% of the USA you are gonna have to do a lot of walking before you find a soccer game to hop in

Give me a break. Michael Vick grew up in the hood too. The romanticization some of you guys have for these foreign athletes is hilarious.

We both want the same thing, to get our best athletes to play the sport. Or more of them. But the way to do that is to increase access to the sport for people of all classes and to fix youth development. Imagining a situation in which the infrastructure is magically in place isn't a useful thought experiment for me.

But chances are you will find a basketball game or kids tossing a football in about two or three blocks.

It's difficult to have an argument with you when you make a dumb point about the one famous world class athlete Jamaica has ever produced, use that dude as a reference point to disparage my point about the overall superiority of the American athlete, and then try to twist my points up.

You are the one that seems to think soccer players are these little 5'6 savants that America couldn't possibly ever compete with. It's ridiculous. If Americans gave a shite about making a real difference on the soccer world stage and the conditions were what they needed to be here, our athletes and resources would be a massive advantage for us.

I understand that man. I was arguing the hypothetical points to defend against people that think all we're missing is to get rid of pay for play. It will take much better athletes, better coaching, and a bit of shift in our culture for American soccer to happen. The good thing is it seems to be happening, albeit kinda slowly.

You’re aware that the best Croatian athletes play basketball or handball, right?

The first thing there needs to be is proper youth development. Once we maximize the talent we have available then you'll see more talented kids. As it stands, a super athlete would be crazy to choose soccer.

No, not really man. If this is where you're coming from in terms of knowledge of sports that aren't soccer, we're going to have a hard time arguing about this. Baseball, football, and the majority of basketball players are built very similar to the best players you're seeing at the World Cup. The difference is in the training. It produces a different body. We have the best athletes in the world. More than anyone by a lot. But still, we don't have an unlimited amount of them. Soccer needs more of them, along with smarter coaching and developing and training, to get where we want US soccer to be ultimately.
