I was in Dallas, too. Atmosphere for all the matches I attended was brilliant. That Netherlands v. Brazil quarterfinal...just...holy moly it was freaking awesome.
You know what else, being able to stand and cheer when BOTH teams scored!
That 1994 tournament should have shut up the world, once and for all, about support for soccer in the United States. "Regular" Americans turned out in droves along with the traveling supporters. EVERY match was sold out of tickets, and there were bums in seats. It was an unqualified success.
New Orleans has no real soccer/football track record, when these things come up, that's what we hear. The world SHOULD know that this town is a championship/big event town. We damn well SHOULD have matches here. But they look at a venue's "soccer record" and we just don't have it. I wrote a letter in 1989 to the Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation BEGGING them to start up a real, concerted campaign to get matches in 1994. They quoted this issue to me, I mean the 1992 Olympic Track and Field Trials turned out amazingly well, there was no reason New Orleans should have been left out of 1994, either. But GNOSF made excuses and failed to pursue it.
I fear this is already a done deal, especially since the U.S. has to share venues across the nation and in two other nations to boot. This shite is for the birds. It's not as if the U.S. has to build new venues just for this.
Getting real grass in and out gets easier every year, and the Superdome for all the bitching "fans" do about this or that, has ALWAYS been a functional and very adaptable building. It would be a tremendous venue for the World Cup.

A retractable roof. Don't think too hard.

I heard yesterday, but didn't listen to the interview, that Matt Moscona had Jay Cicero of the GNOSF. Moscona indicated that New Orleans has been asked to bid!!
That changes thing, a great deal, that's very optimistic!! It means someone, somewhere, thinks New Orleans should be a part of this thing. There really isn't a bad seat in that stadium, and by 2026 the mechanics/engineering to get the grass in and out of there should be well planned and executed.
